I take it you were instructed to upsell shots. Let me put it this way... You'll learn to read people better and intuitively change what items to upsell or with whom to avoid making any such offers, both of which will mostly prevent awkward interactions like that. Obviously some people are going to be dicks anyway but being more flexible with your script and adapting to needs proactively goes a long way.

Decaf customers can be highly afraid of getting caffeine. It's understandable if they have anxieties or whatever. You'll learn to get a read kn your customers tone and expressions and will learn when to ask questions like that.

Personally, though, I find upselling to be very difficult and it's hard to avoid aggravating customers with it. I think it's a dumb expectation to have at a job like Starbucks.

They don’t get better sweetie, but after some time you eventually start to realize it’s not against YOU. They are just bitter with life :)

It will not get better but you just end up getting used to it.
