Only working drive thru?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mj115
I’ve been working for Starbucks for a few months now, but I am exceeding the level that I should be at. I’ve worked at other stores many times and they always rotate their partners. I have proved to be just as good on bad as everyone else but yet I have only been put at Drive thru. Not even been put at warning or CS or anything. Just drive thru. Is this normal? When should I expect to be somewhere else? There are people at my store that literally only work bar and they never have to do anything else. And my shifts even work wherever they want to and don’t care they always put themselves at bar.

At my store it's pretty common to be on only dt or front for the first 3 months. Most new people would work preclose or close at first so they'd get practice towards the end of the night when they have to bar for themselves. If you're working open or mid, you gotta ask for it bc most shifts are gonna want their strongest people on bar..

Yeah I can understand being new and what not but I’ve honestly only been on front like 1 or 2 times. Like I’m actually glued on DT and I just think it’s not fair. You can’t build strong people if you don’t give them a chance. I work mornings during weekdays and closing on weekends. I’m just trying not to upset people but at the same time like something isn’t right lol.

At my store I’m still moderately new (3 months) and I have one shift that always puts me on DT. I hate DT and she never gives me a chance on bar. If you want to get out of it talk to your shift and say, “hey I was wondering if I could expand my skills and try cs, front, or warming today.” I find if you word it right then they tend to go with it. Also, your shift might think that you love DT so they are putting you there because they think you like it

I don’t have DT but literally I work it every shift and when I’m working almost everyday like my throat honestly hurts by the end of the night. And I also hate it because my SM like wants me to literally be the brightest most happiest person and literally never break a smile. It’s annoying. And she always expects me to say good morning to everyone even when I’m taking orders on DT even when half the people in there don’t do any of that on bar or anything else. It’s just getting annoying. It’s nice working at other stores since they actually rotate their partners and let everyone get bar time. Not the same 3 people every single day. And yeah I’ve thought about speaking out but then those 3 same bar people I already know will get pissed off when they have to do something else.

It's very normal to be set mostly in one position, especially if you seem to do well there. If you don't like it you can DEFINITELY ask your SSV to put you somewhere else, but it's not a point against you. To be honest, drive thru takes the most multitasking of any position so if you're good at it, welcome to our exclusive club! I was a drive thru closer for most of my first two years and came to appreciate the routine. Since I have been in a couple Cafe only stores since then, I am often on POS especially in peak because I am efficient and accurate with it. I have a culinary degree so one might say my skills are a bit wasted, but I see it as my ability to set my bar team up for success by giving them correct information.

Yeah I never really think of it that way tbh but I see what you’re saying! I don’t mind working closing DT cause our store is pretty slow and so there’s only me and 2 other people and I love the bar person who closes. He is awesome and so I don’t mind working with him. It’s normally when I work mornings during the week is when I’m more annoyed.

Yeah I can understand that about putting the strongest people where they need to be. Just gets annoying sometimes. Especially when I know I’m capable of doing better things then getting treated like I still don’t know anything. If that makes sense.

I’ve been at a corporate location for 2 months at 40hrs/week, opening shifts, and I’ve done everything except officially bar.

I’m usually on DT (I think I get less irritated than other partners, usually). It sucks but I get to practice drinks in the early hours before we get busy (5-6am).

You have to understand they normally want the quickest people on bar (especially during peak) so don’t feel offended if it’s a few more weeks. Just make sure to say “I want to practice some drinks today”.

We have a partner who is an older woman and was with the company for 2-3 years only doing cafe. She was upset because she felt she was being singled out for her age and race about not being really trained on bar, especially when newer younger baristas would come in and immediately be trained on bar. She mentioned several times to SM but of course no change. Eventually she gave up trying and just does cafe now, I think it’s been 4 years or more. She can definitely make drinks, she just does it in the early hours before our other bars come in
