Pour overs (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SaintBert47
Hey everyone, so I’m not a barista but I do have a question. I’m away from usual Starbucks that I go to that has a clover. So I’ve been going to a few different Starbucks in my travel area and every time I order a blonde pour over it seems I keep trying to be dissuaded from ordering it. Do baristas not like doing pour overs?

Thanks in advance.

Typically not because it slows down everything they’re doing. I’m retired from Starbucks but if blonde espresso is a thing maybe ask for a blonde americano as it’s a bit faster, but don’t be discouraged from what you truly want.

Thanks for your answer! I will try a blonde americano next time. I normally do my pour overs at home but I don’t have it with me so, I didn’t see the harm in asking at Starbucks

It depends on the time of day and how busy we are. Honestly, I enjoy them but it’s time consuming so during a rush it becomes more difficult. If you can come into the store for the pour over, it shouldn’t be a problem. In the drive through, it’s annoying. Just being honest :)

Thank you, I’ll keep that in mind

And when I say it’s annoying, it’s because our drive times are super important and we would probably ask you to pull around to run it to your car once it finishes. At that point, if you’re able to, you should just order in the cafe!

Also, mobile ordering is another good option. Just allow time before you come to pick it up because (again, depending on how busy it is) it could take up to 10 minutes if other drinks
are ahead of yours.

Sorry, that’s a lot but I just want to make sure you understand our side. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you like!

So I almost never use the drive through, and I did try to find it in the mobile order app, but was unable to locate that as an option. My brother in law who used to be a Starbucks partner alluded to that they might not like pour overs but the last three visits at Starbucks as proven to be a true statement.

I definitely try to be aware of my surroundings and if it’s super busy then I will just order a non pour over coffee.

Thanks for your help!

Oh, You’re right it’s not in the app. Usually in the afternoon if someone orders a brew that we stopped brewing that morning, we will make a pour over. My bad!

Honestly when it’s quieter I don’t mind pour overs. But my store gets insanely busy and I’ll admit that when it’s 7a.m peak on a weekday and a customer orders a Sumatra pour over I have forgotten about it before for up to fifteen minutes because I’m trying to rapidly get through 50+ people and make food on top of it. When that’s the case I’ll often recommend Americanos, because I know people have places to be and it makes my life easier. But if it’s what you truly want you shouldn’t be given trouble for it. But the blonde espresso is really good! I get it in all my drinks.

The other half of this is that probably 90% of the baristas at my store do not know how to do a pour over. I'll take them, and I enjoy them, but I wouldn't trust any of my coworkers to make one for me. Which is understandable because we don't really do any, ever. If someone wants even a tall blonde we'll brew a quarter batch (the smallest size we can on our brewers) and save it in case anybody else wants some.

If someone specifically wants a pour over, though, I'll make it. I've seen too many "dump-overs" where the partner takes the water, dumps it all in the grounds carelessly, and hands it off after about five seconds.

I actually really like pour overs and don't mind making them, even if we are on the busier side... but I do still try to disuade people from getting them/recommend americanos as an alternative, because I want to make sure the guest knows that it's going to take some time. If it is busy it can easily take close to ten minutes, and lots of our guests don't understand the pour over method and can get frustrated. I agree with the others, try to be aware of your surroundings when you order one and your barista will be appreciative! (But if they're being a jerk to you, it isn't your fault. They're a barista, coffee is our job.)
