My store opens tomorrow (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’ve done three days of training not including today, and then on Wednesday we’re opening. We’ll have managers from Starbucks stores in the area coming by to help out, but what advice would you give to a stressed out, slightly scared, 20 year old new barista?

Just keep breathing. It's just coffee.

Sometimes you have to go slow to go fast. Like, yes, maybe there's all these people waiting and starting at you and you feel like you're under a lot of pressure, but don't panic, because then you lose control. Keep making two drinks at a time, ringing in one order at a time, keep putting in food or brewing coffee or whatever you're doing. Move quickly but carefully, because freaking out and making a mess makes it even worse. Or freaking out and trying to rush too fast through a drink, you'll probably have to remake it and take even more time.

Speed and confidence come with time, so until you get there, focus on doing it right without stressing out. Everyone was new once and we all remember that feeling and nobody will judge you for it. Just do the best job you can.

^What they said. Remember it really is just coffee. Do your best and everything will work out in the end.

Remembering “it’s just coffee” has helped me calm down during stressful shifts a lot. If you, or anyone for that matter, makes a mistake just remember that.

As others have said, don’t be afraid to tell customers you’re a new partner. Generally, saying “Sorry, in new” immediately calms down people who seem annoyed. Most people have been there at one point in their life.

The best advice I've gotten regarding rush is to take everything one step at a time. They can't expect you to do everything at the same time and do it perfectly in a short amount of time. Forget about the drinks waiting to be made when you're already working on more than one, or you'll drive yourself nuts. That last one might not be the best approach, but that's how I keep myself sane.

If they put you on front register, don’t be scared to let people know you’re a new partner. Ask your other team members questions, that’s the only way you’ll learn.
It’s just one cup, one order, one person at a time. If you’re on bar, make yourself a little cheat sheet for pumps and shots. You’ve got this 100%.
Have a good first day :)
