Maybe an HR issue.... (self.starbucksbaristas)

Posting for a Friend:

I’m a partner at a Starbucks (afraid to post my location in case of retaliation as that happens to me often). I have recently moved a more than 2 hour bus ride away and have been denied a transfer though several other partners have transferred short notice (a week or two max) and I have been requesting for 3 months and have only been given the answer “It is not the right time.” with no explanation. The other Starbucks in my area have already agreed to have me.

- I am a 2+ year partner with zero write-ups and always get there early. I have been bullied in front of customers. I was recently diagnosed with major depression and gave my SM a 7+ day notice of a doctor appointment (have done longer notices in the past, this is the shortest and it is on average a month notice) and have accrued over 120 hours of Protected Sick Time and PTO that she will not allow me to use as well as telling me I cannot go unless I find someone to cover my shift, the schedule wasn’t made yet when I told her/gave notice and with the schedule she made I would only have to now leave an hour early and has threatened retaliation. She has signed off on 3 people switching shifts on the day I needed covered though those team members did not reply to my requests.

This is a normal happening. Little things like cheating with votes (putting in multiple votes for the same name by employees who didn't vote/no longer work for us but were still on the roster) on the Partner of the Quarter so I’ve never received it/had a chance to and stuff like my manager always brings in birthday cakes and makes signs for other employees, new or old, every single one and I was purposely left off of the board and never received recognition (not the biggest deal but it is an example of favoritism). One time an ASM put me on register and screamed at me in front of customers to stay right there for the rest of my shift “that I was annoying her and she really just didn’t f*cking like me” and had to stand there for multiple hours without moving. Customers left the store because of her actions. One day almost got hit by a car taking the trash out and my hand got slammed into the dumpster and I wasn’t able to leave nor was it followed up on. I passed kidney stones at work and couldn’t leave for the hospital until after my shift, and I have had major hand injuries that were never reported (I reported the injuries to management, management did not report and would tell me I had to stay).

I would like to add I absolutely love my job and love what I do, just my “team leaders” make me so miserable and I leave most days crying. The partners I work with have many of the same issues from management, just not as severe or they quit before it can get to that point.

———-

Edit: Clarification on a few things as in this partner *is* going by protocol. I’m not quite sure why there are so many downvotes, if you want to downvote could you at least give feedback?

Statement From the Partner: I love my job and company and my partners I work with. The main problem remains with management. I wish I didn’t have to remain anonymous because of this situation. I work hard and have pride for the company I work for, just being targeted in this way has really broken my morale and any self-worth I have and it’s hard to take pride in a job when you are constantly put down. Tell the people on this post thank you for the support, it truly means the world to me.

Contact your DM and or Partner Resources IMMEDIATELY. If that doesn’t help, quit, and then reapply at the store closest to you.

I’m posting in lieu of this person :/ Also was denied a promotion over someone who had been working there a month with zero prior work experience or relevant education. If this person was this big of an eff up, trust me I’d let this person know, but they aren’t hence this hurts me to watch.

Oh goodness. I’d say tell them to go as far up in the chain of command as they need to find a solution. That is terrible.

The main concern is loss of health benefits.

Start at DM and move up. That’s workplace abuse. That manager could get sued or fired for that kinda crap.

This person has also been pressed to “only go to the SM as she is the boss of the store” - I think the DM is a good place to start, this person barely knows the DM as they are told to act differently when the DM does her rounds. I really, really don’t want a job lost or at least have a transfer done.

Make sure she knows her rights in her state. Reporting workplace abuse is generally a protected action of an employee, and firing one for filing a formal complaint is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Mental disability being the major depression/ADHD diagnosis. This person handles it fine but only needs to obviously visit the doctor once a month to check in.
holykhrist [OP] 1 points 3y ago
Also since the fact a “mental disability” is at play and it has been made aware of is another thing, also testing for the promotion may have fallen under needing special circumstances because of verbal test would’ve been needed versus written or possibly given extra time because it is also documented as dyslexia/another learning disability and that was not accommodated I’m not sure if that is something that is possible but everything verbal was passed in any skill test was passed but the written part was excruciating - knew the answers but wasn’t given anything to study/expect/etc. versus the new hire with no experience was guided through. They have set this person up to fail. I’ve never seen a person being bullied/used as a punching bag at a job this bad in my life and I’ve had some crap jobs. What is sad is that I know Starbucks isn’t supposed to be about stuff like this.

Starbucks already has a policy of trying to keep partners within a 20 minute commute radius, if there are closer locations and they are willing to take you there is no way your SM can say no.
holykhrist [OP] 1 points 3y ago
There are 7 locations within 3 miles. 4 within 1.5.

If anyone on here as a supervisor or DM/SM can you please let me know if this is correct protocol at all?
