Really nice & appreciate DT customer (self.starbucksbaristas)

Alright so I’m a fairly green bean (2-3 months, 40hr weeks) and I’m on DT 99% of the time. It gets old but I have my good days.

Today a very nice guy came through, and wanted an iced venti latte or something, with 3 shots. Well that comes with 3 shots, so I asked if he’d like to add an extra and he said “sure, whatever gets me through this drive!”

So naturally while waiting on his drink during off peak hours, I asked where he was traveling to and all that, he had about a 6-8 hr drive ahead of him. Well, I just moved and made that drive like 6 times so I’m quite well versed!

Anyways I was being friendly and making a joke or two and he said he works in marketing or something and that they can’t pay people to be as friendly as me, and honestly, it was so, so nice to hear. I told him my secret was a quad shot (what he got, and what I had maybe 1/2 hr before) and we had a nice laugh.

Next time I think about quitting, which will be in 4 hrs when I get up to open, I’ll remember him. You guys remember him too because I bet someone in your day thinks you’re just as amazing and friendly, even if they don’t have the chance to verbalize it.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk

Hey friend, I hope your opening shift goes well.

Thanks for sharing a little bit of positivity!

That’s awesome! I like being in DTW during peak because there’s not a lot of stress to do other things (stay planted) except make customer connections and you know the drink is going to be ready soon so there’s no long awkwardness as you stare into the pits of Karen’s black soul.

>40hr weeks

Please tell me your secret. I was promised fulltime hours when I interviewed for this job and so far that has been a 100% empty promise. Instead I get stupid BS like recently when I had mostly 4.5 hour shifts back to back for 11 days straight. Not to mention getting asked to clock in 1 hour ahead of my scheduled start time a couple of those days...

I love when you can get a good back and forth with a customer, though. Really and actually connect with them. It's part of the reason I do stay. I'm with you on the 'every time I open after any other kind of shift I wish for death/unemployment" thing, for sure.

My secret is my store has WAY too high of a turnover rate! We’re the busiest store in the area, 800-1000 customers a day, but the thing is, is it’s not even my store. I applied to a different, got hired and trained at a different one, and my SM said I’d be at the busy store until they found coverage for me, 1-2 months max. It’s been 3 months...

Anyways, for example we had 3 people quit this week. So we were SEVERELY understaffed, on top of already being generally short staffed. My shift supervisors always ask me to stay late and pick up shifts but I literally can not do it, for my sanity.

If you can, speak with your shift and your coworkers and ask if any of them would give up shifts/change their availability so you can work more. I’m sure they’ll be happy to since everyone kind of hates it, at least in my experience.

Also, in most states you don’t have to work outside your set availability, so if you ask for weekends off and they schedule you, after your availability request was approved, you do not have to show up. They’ll be mad but I’ve learned if you start to say yes they’ll expect it from you, so you have to say no.

And yes, the regulars who are so kind are the absolute best. We have a guy who is neck to fingers covered in black work tattoos and he and his dog come through twice a day. He’s an anesthesiologist and his dog is so soft! But seeing him makes the whole shift better. He’s so smiley.

This company mostly won’t do shit for you though, so DO NOT sacrifice your mental health and family/friend/relationships for them. Hope this helps some!! And if it gets to the point, you can always talk to the district manager and they’ll mostly be happy to help. (Sorry this is so long!) Best of luck to you!!!!!

Ahhh. :\ My store perhaps is too new to have that level of turnover yet (we opened just 2-3 months ago,) but we're definitely losing people and I hear that quite a few people are citing the schedule as why. My store has at least 30 partners, which has been the reasoning given as to why our schedule is absurd. E.g. I was scheduled 11 days back to back and all but one were no longer than 5 hours. I've expressed to my SM that I want something more stable and predictable, and also that the variability in my hours gives me anxiety (The week I worked 7 days straight came out to 36 hours, but two weeks previous I was only scheduled for 19.) Anyway, it's a whole thing. :\

It’s always a whole thing at Starbucks :( when I finish the spring and summer semesters at ASU before I go to an actual university I’ll probably quit. Or maybe before. Who knows. I think it’s more stressful than when I was a server
