I am a seasoned barista and a shift. I was on bar today and the person working the window who is like two months old was in aw. He kept asking me how I move so smoothly and how am I so fast. He then asked me if I even think about it. That got me... I had to think to answer the question because for the life of me I could not answer it on the fly. I don’t, I don’t think I just make. Anyone else have that? You get in your groove and you just do.
The one lesson that that a my old shift taught me is you can only move as fast as the machine. That is what I focus on. It’s not about the stickers or how fast I am because I can only be as quick as the machine.
Sorry if that got random but I had to see if anyone else just goes into robot mode.

Back when i used to close, my wife would come in and sit and get a drink and watch me work. She tells me it looks like I'm preforming a ballet for myself, smooth and flowy and graceful. Personally, I feel like I look like a clunky behemoth throwing stuff around. I think once we get fast enough, even if you are overwhelmed with drinks, bar stars make it look effortless.

Whenever new hires ask about barring, I’m always like... one day it just clicks and you stop thinking about it. I only ever pause to think whether I have time to make and blend a frap while my shots are pulling. Yes. Yes I can.
And really, sometimes I’m double barring by myself and get a queue of americanos and I do a little dance. Can only go as fast as the shots.

I think little dances are the language of the baristas.

Reminds me of the guy who stood at the hand off plane and stared at me. When I finally handed him his drink he just says “It’s really fascinating to watch you multitask.” I barely had the chance to say thanks before smiled and ran out of the store. That was a nice dude.

I realized I was officially a seasoned barista a few weeks ago when almost everyday someone commented on how I was like “a Swiss watch” when on bar. It was kind of awesome.

I totally feel this. I love being a robot on bar, because I get into a groove and can make every thing fast and efficiently. However, hate when I become a robot on register. I’ll be out here asking the customer what their name is 2 times by accident (we write names w sharpie as I’m at a tarbux)

I totally go into robot mode. If I have 4 or more drinks I zone everything out around me. My coworker has had to walk up to me and get into my line of sight because I was zoning out her voice

I’m almost at my 4 year mark. Worked all day parts. Trained well over 40 people. Was a shift then decided it wasn’t for me. Decided closing was my jam. I’m there. I can do it with my eyes closed. Yesterday I was feeling well, and before they sent me home they asked me where I wanted to be after I got back from my lunch since I wasn’t feeling well. I said just put me on bar, I don’t have to think when I do that.
A new partner came up to me and said, “if you wanna switch with me and you put up the truck, that’d be fine.” I felt bad cause she’s new and she needs the practice but I didn’t wanna be anywhere else cause I could just do my thing. Kinda scary. We belong to the siren now.
