I’m in need of some advice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by psych-d
So I’m a consistent 4:30 opener—I used to open nearly every shift with two closing shifts a month. After addressing my concern to my ASM, I now open 3 times with two 6am shifts every week. (For context, I started in June and I didn’t get 6am shifts until the beginning of Sept.) Either way, this is still extremely physically taxing. Especially when I’m getting home as my significant other is leaving for classes/work.
I usually get home, shower, and immediately fall asleep. Sometimes I won’t wake up until 5pm or later. I waste my whole day and I can’t even go out at night because I have to get up at 3:30 to start all over again. Do any of y’all who open pretty consistently have any tips on not dying all the time? I just want to feel like I have a semblance of a life/a little free time but I’m always just so exhausted. I want to start working out and focusing on my grad school apps but I’m really struggling.

TL;DR: I work opens a lot and I’m having trouble balancing work, my need for sleep, and the rest of my life all at once. Any advice is welcome. Sorry for the long post, I didn’t realize I needed to rant too!

As a consistent opener myself, the real best remedy for this is to get a good 5 to 8 hours of sleep and eat a nutritional breakfast for energy. I don't recommend that anyone should be scheduled to open consecutively because it is quite difficult to balance staying awake at least 18 hours a day. See if your ASM can mix the times a little more so you can get even more hours of sleep. If I feel like I need to be awake for the rest of the day, I would usually tend to sip an Iced Americano after getting out of work lol, it's very tough to get used to the routine even after working at my store for almost a year. Best of luck!

Yeah, I agree with this. Getting around 7 hours of sleep is ideal for me. If I nap after work, it’s only for an hour max. I try to get chores done around the house to keep me awake and then I start my schoolwork. I also spend a decent amount of time meal planning/prepping. It’s so worth it. Keep it simple — grains, proteins, fruit and veg. I tend to do better when I eat all fruit in the morning, and having my lunch ready to go for the day allows me to just clock out and sit down for my lunch.

One other thing I do is try to change my mental perspective a bit. Whatever my schedule is, I’m focused and committed to my store and my fellow Partners. But once I clock out, the corporation shouldn’t have a say in what I do or how I spend my time. They don’t get to take family or study time from me. Hope that makes sense.

Oh wow that last paragraph!!! That’s such a good way to put it

can I ask what you normally choose for breakfast? I guess I’m still trying to build that healthy routine for such ungodly morning hours lol

Hi, frequent opener here. I buy protein shakes at Costco (a package of 18 shakes) and have one every morning. It’s usually enough to hold me over until my first 10. The brand is Premier Protein if you’re interested!

I’ve been trying to find my mojo with this as well. Luckily I don’t open-open every day, sometimes I’m second in. I also sometimes work baby shifts, which are super nice. For me, if I open and work more than 6 hours, I come home, shower, and sleep for an hour, max. Just enough to get a little boost. And then I get up and get dressed and go about my day. I’m also on grad school so I have evening classes two nights a week that really screw me up. If I work a baby shift like 4 or 5 hours I do my best to not go to bed, I just shower and move on. In addition to school, I also have family, a special needs kid, a household to run, etc.

And, I go to bed at something ridiculous like 8 or 8:30 when I have to open the next day, and 9 or so on other nights. Living the rockstar life. Lol

Honestly, I opened consistently for the first 7 months with Starbucks. It’s hell but, don’t sleep after work, use that time to be productive. Eventually you’ll be able to function with a couple hours of sleep.
