Cannot get hired :( (rant/vent) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ahbeeceeess
About a year ago I applied to a Starbucks near me. I had recently moved to a new city for university and was looking for a part time job. Long story short, I kept being told “you’ll hear from us/the manager in a few days”, a week would pass, no one would call, and I would call again just to hear the same thing. After about a month and a half of this (I never even got an interview, nor did I ever get a solid no we aren’t hiring you), I gave up and stopped wasting their/my time.

Earlier this week (Wednesday) I saw an ad on a job board that that same location was now under new management and was having a walk-in interview day. I have a job that I hate so I thought I’d go. Got there early, was the first one interviewed, manager seemed to really like my answers to his questions, said he’d be making calls around 12-12:30. That day around 2:30 I hadn’t heard anything so I decided to call them, whoever answered the phone said the manager had to go home early because his kid was sick and that he’d be in on Friday from 7-3.

Today (Friday) I called the store around 9:30 (figured the morning rush would be over by then), was told he was on the phone and the girl asked for my name and number and said he’d call me later. It’s just about 3 now, so the manager is probably about to leave, I have not received a call, I don’t want to call again because I think that’d be too pushy and annoying but I really want this job. I feel like I had a great interview, really connected with the manager and I have lots of customer service experience. I know there are probably lots of people with better resumes and interview than me but I’ve been trying to get hired there for a year now and I just really want the chance to prove I’m a good fit for this job.

I don’t think anyone will have any advice for me since it’s obviously up to the store manager, just needed to vent somewhere because I’m getting really frustrated

I completely understand your frustration. Ever since I was able to work, I started applying to Starbucks. I applied to numerous of stores and even personally talked to Store Managers about my application. But no official interview.

Even a store called me to set up an interview, but despite following up numerous of times, I never heard back from them again.

Finally, 3 years later I applied again, but to a Starbucks that is close to my college, around 45 minutes away from home. I had a phone interview with the SM, then a in-person interview. He promised to give me a call the next day, after he interviewed a few more people. He didn’t call, and I was devastated. I thought the interview went well. I have a lot of good customer service experience.

However a day after that, he called and informed me that the system was down and he was unable to find my phone number. But I got the job!

For your situation, you mentioned that the SM had to deal with his sick kids and then you called in the morning at 9:30a. For our store at least, morning rush doesn’t end til like 11a. Perhaps the SM had other duties to fulfill and did not have time to go through applications and reviewing interviews. I would say give it another day, and follow-up one more time.

At that point, if they don’t respond, I would say just try another store. It could be for the best.
