Please order water in line and don’t ask the barista at the hand off area for water when it’s busy. Heck, even when it is slow order in line. Otherwise, it doesn’t matter to us if you order just water! Bonus points if you bring your own bottle (save the earth!)

If I buy a drink I get iced green teas and even if I’d prefer light ice I don’t ask for it because it sounds snobby.
What do you think of people who ask for a refill (free with card) of tea after having a venti? Why do people announce refill instead of the drink name?

If you like light ice you should ask for it. You are not a snob until you ask for no ice.
I don't really think anything of refills except to make sure that they actually got it at my store.
Triune3332 points3y ago
I always stand in line to ask for anything. I always thought it seemed unsanitary when I saw people hand bottles but thanks for letting me know.

Order it in line. I love making water for customers! Bitt please do it in line ♥️
nahhhhnottoday2 points3y ago
Light ice is not snobby! Really it doesn’t make any difference - that’s one mod that is not at all time consuming!
Triune3332 points3y ago
I always get in line to ask for something

I don't mind light ice. Order how you want it's cool!! I'm also happy to give a refill on anything I can, especially my awesome regulars

If anything it’s easier to have the ice as the cup fills up faster haha.

I would make a purchase once in a while. A snack bar or tea or something. They get scheduled hours based on sales volume. So drinking free water, using their materials (a cup and lid and especially taking up their time/energy) is not nothing, and I believe the staff is not fairly credited for it. Do you tip a small amount at least?
Habitually taking up a seat can eventually be annoying if you don't contribute to the business/staff/atmosphere that you enjoy. It's not the library.
Triune3331 points3y ago
I don’t tip but I want to start at least a dollar.

After buying any drink full price, refills (of drip, iced coffee, or hot/iced teas)are only $0.50, or free for gold members (who have registered gift cards that they pay with).
You're totally fine if you made a purchase, especially if you tip and are nice, you will in no way be bothering your barista by getting water or refills.

I know some people tip a nickel/whatever is left from their purchase and I see that as cheap, but is a dollar tip fine? I should start tipping, I foolishly always think I’m flat broke but need to stop just thinking of myself and I never thought employees cared anyway because I heard a worker say one time that the tips barely come out to less than $1-5 total in the end of the week but I guess they still notice who tips? I’ve had occasions when workers offered free wrong orders and was thinking I should tip $5 or maybe at least $3 or even $1 instead of just thanking them.
PhenomenalPhoenix2 points3y ago
A $1 tip may not seem like a lot but think about it this way, if you got a $2 drink that would be a 50% tip, a $3 drink it would be a 33% tip, a $4 drink it would be a 25% tip, etc. Also if 20 people come through and they each only tip $0.50 that would still be $10 in the tip jar. Seriously you don’t have to worry about tipping more than $1. More is appreciated but so is even just $0.50
icelessTrash2 points3y ago
We don't serve you at a table or anything, so I don't think you have any required tip amount, small change is a nice gesture. I work in an affluent area and many people tip $1.
If it's a free drink offered to you, they are being kind after making a mistake and don't want it to go to waste, you don't have any obligation. But $1 is more than kind. Of you are well off, maybe more, it really does make a difference in people's lives if they have a nice paycheck.

I don’t actually know if grande is the default refill size but you can ask for no or 1/2 the water if you want a stronger tea flavor. Us baristas really aren’t going to care all that much if you want light ice or no water. It’s when someone asks for no ice AND no water that we start to hesitate especially if it’s a trenta
PhenomenalPhoenix2 points3y ago
If you’re wondering about the hanging around without making an actual purchase, an easy to make drink to buy is an iced chai - it’s just chai, milk, ice, done. But if you’re just wondering about the ordering water thing I agree with everyone who said wait in line to order it rather than just going to the handoff plane to ask for it.

I don’t know why people announce refill, I’m usually just able to do a refill and turn around and just hand it straight back to them, I don’t wanna announce refill because then some people assume you can get a refill on anything or that anyone gets free refills. I don’t mind when people ask for a refill, most people ask for refills on brewed coffee at my store though

Sometimes I feel like I'm getting jibbed when buying green tea because it's so little actual tea and so much water and ice, but then I tell myself it's about the flavor and not the amount of tea inside so as long as it tastes good I should be happy. That's why I get a refill to at least feel like I'm not getting ripped off by the corporation so much. Is grande the default refill size? When I get a venti green tea I usually get a grande refill, not complaining but just curious if that's standard. Next time I'm thinking of just getting a grande green tea so it's cheaper and getting a refill because that's more than enough tea. Venti and then grande refill is too much tea.

you can always order with light ice and light water so that you get a stronger tea flavor! thats how i like mine :)

Nitro cold brew is literally the easiest thing in the world, actually easier than water
Triune3331 points3y ago
I literally always see the nitro cold brew start spitting out foam and the barista having to get a new tank lol
Opheriaux1 points3y ago
That might just be your store, I don't have enough experience to say for sure tho

There is **nothing wrong** with just ordering an ice water and relaxing at Starbucks. Whether you want something iced or not, specify it with the Partner on register. It does not make the Barista's life harder if you want a scoop of ice or not. It **does not** take much for them to make your drink **how you want it**.
The purpose of Starbucks is to "commit to creating a culture of warmth and belonging where **everyone is welcome**. This policy is intended to help maintain the third place environment in alignment with our mission "to inspire and nurture the human spirit - one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.""
According to their **policy statement**, Starbucks's stores are meant to be "the third place, a warm and welcoming environment where customers can gather and connect. Any customer is welcome to use Starbucks spaces, including our restrooms, cafes and patios, **regardless of whether they make a purchase**."
To do your part, all you have to do is "**use spaces as intended, being considerate of others, communicating with respect, and acting responsibly**."
As others have stated, it would make the barista's shift easier if you were to order a cup of water at the register, rather than the hand-off area.
Our mission is to provide everyone with access to large- scale community websites for the good of humanity. Without ads, without tracking, without greed.
