i have a question. i’ve been working at my store for a good 2 years. i feel my work has been consistantly good however i’ve only ever stayed at the barista position. i want to become a shift and feel like i would be good at it, should i tell my manager this or should i wait for an unprompted promotion?

When i applied for my barista position i laid it out to my SM to be that i wanted to learn as much as i could as fast as i could and either move up or move out, while it takes a lot of confidence to do that, saying what you want and not beating around the bush will be huge for you. I was hired in April as a barista and became a shift in October, work harder than everybody around you and be better and you’ll be golden 👍🏼 good luck!

Asking never hurts! Worst case your manager will be able to say where you need to improve if they feel you need to

Also your GM should be giving you partner development conversation. If not you should definitely ask about it

Your manager won't know you want to be promoted if you don't tell them. Some people like just working one position for yeeeaaarrsss and others are trying to work their way up in the company, you SM can't know which one is which without you being direct and honest.

I would ask your SM for a time to talk. They won't know what you want till.you tell them! I'm transferring to a new store (new to me, not new in general) and I plan to talk to my SM in the next month after he has a chance to see my performance and I get used to it and tell him I'd like to reach shift as soon as I can. And then ask for feedback- how can I improve? Are there certain skills I can improve on? Customer service/making the moment right/ interacting in general? What do you need to see from me to show you I can take on shift responsibilities?
Stuff like that :) good luck!!

Asking always helps tell your SM that you're interested! I've been with the siren for about 7 weeks and I've already been promoted to trainer, and that wouldn't have happened if I weren't assertive with my desires to grow past just being a barista.

I won't be surprised if he asks me to be a shift within a few months. I've been more assertive with the other baristas, asking them to do work when they're just standing around and the counters are a mess, something needs to be cleaned, etc. And I include my SM in issues in the store when he's not there and the shift isn't pulling their weight.

In my experience myself and others have had to repeatedly mention that you have interest in moving up. After keeping it on your managers radar for a while they typically will begin to notice you and your actions more and take the promotion more seriously.

Otherwise unfortunately, I’ve seen the partner that overworked themselves and did a million hours of OT be noticed and asked to be promoted haha. I’ve also seen people who have made a great impression on another store manager be asked to be promoted so that they may be transferred to their store.
