Closing with customers inside?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TheatreAS
So this seemed kinda of concerning to me.
I just transferred to a new store and I did one close. As we were closing, there were a few customers in our lobby. I said I was going to inform them that we were closing in about 5 minutes and my SS told me j couldn't do that and we couldn't ask them to leave until 10-15 minutes after we were actually closed. I've worked in a few different stores now, and I've never heard that ever. It seems sort of sketchy to me honestly. Is this actually a standard of corporate? If it's not, should I do something? Because I feel like with as mhch cash handling that's happening in such a high volume volume store, that could easily cause a problem.

You’re entirely right. It’s a huge cash handling violation. >.>

they are right (as long as they don’t start counting tolls yet) one of my shifts follow that rule. as long as they came in before close they have 10 minutes. it will slow you down a lot but my shift has definitely done the same thing :\

Maybe it's different per district but my store immediately kicks people out at close because we can't even open the safe until people are gone. We always give five-ten minute warnings as well

Obviously there are descrepencies between each district, but one would think that this would be a universal issue given that it's dealing with safety and cash management safety, right?

I would agree, seems like a really big issue to me \_(°~°)_/

We do the same. The second our clocks hit 9 we are closed. Doesn’t matter if someone shows up exactly at 9. We won’t serve.

Right? We have one regular who stays until close and he always tries to order his drink refill (of which is stupidly complicated) at like 9:59 or at 10:00. He always blows us off when we give him the warning because he already knows when we close. Then he goes to the bathroom right after that so he's usually left at like 10:04. Super frustrating

Corporate policy is technically we let them stay for 10 minutes before we kick them out. You can still let them know you close in 5 mins tho, just cant kick them out until 10 minutes after. Youre shift shouldnt start cash until theyre gone though, so it wont violate that.

It’s a standard to follow the 10 minute rule of opening and closing 10 minutes before the scheduled open/close time to “delight customers”. SSV shouldn’t be pulling cash or having the safe open at all though.. that is a violation of cash handling.
IMO 10 minute rule is stupid and not consistently followed from store to store and should not be policy.

I agree, I rarely follow it tbh. Its soooooo dumb I hate it

After 4-5 minutes I just lock it up. I get if we have a line a people or whatnot but otherwise I’ll wait a few minutes then close up
very_apologetic2 points3y ago
This is standard, I’ve been told this in all the stores I’ve covered
JHOOOOBI1 points3y ago
You should never have customers in the store or have the doors or window open after close. It’s a huge violation in cash handling and a huge risk for robbery. Your shift could loose their job over it. Consult your GM on the issue.

I don't really feel comfortable going to our manager about that. I think he'd defend the situation and say it's standard.. There are a couple things about this store that I've never experienced anywhere else and it's all his things.
