Any advice for someone about to apply for part time Barista position? (self.starbucksbaristas)

I just wanted to know if there's anything you wish you'd known before applying. :)

It can take up to 6 months to feel like you have everything down so don’t stress yourself out in the beginning at all. It’s a steep learning curve, but muscle memory kicks in. Enjoy the job and the interactions, if your store isn’t the best environment, just transfer stores instead of quitting. Take advantage of all the benefits, there’s so freaking many!

Thank you so much! I've been told that it's really rough, but I think I'm up to it! I'm not easy to get discouraged by small mess ups. It just drives me to try harder, and the benefits really make me want to go for it!

I just have been looking for jobs and it's the only one that sounds enjoyable to me. :)

Physically, it's hard work. That was the biggest surprise for me. You think of a barista and the likely image is of someone making drinks on bar, or maybe working the register.... And trust me, those are more physical than you'd think.... But there are other roles - like Customer Support. This involves mopping floors, hauling HEAVY trash bags full of wet grinds, hauling buckets of ice, and lifting full coffee urns. Or putting away a shipment of heavy items! Be prepared for it. Personally I enjoy this job most of the time but it's a steep learning curve.

Yeah, manual labor doesn't bother me at all! Thank you for the heads up, I hadn't seen somebody mention that.

It's been so much fun. I'm only working at a kiosk but plan to apply for a corporate store in 6 months-year. The drinks are not as difficult or intimidating as I first thought. So, don't let that scare you going in. Take notes when you're first learning. I had a notebook and made notes and then went home and made a mini recipe book/guide complete with tabs lol! I just pull it out of my apron if I forget something. It's actually caught on. Some of the newer hires have asked if they can look through it or copy some notes down. We have a recipe key ring book but it's a pain to flip through when you need something fast.

What I dislike the most is closing. Washing never ending dishes sucks and Every thing else that comes with it. Closing just takes sooo long and I rarely leave on time.

Thank you so much for the heads up! The notes idea is great!

Just remember that everyone in your store has been in the same place as you - new hire. If you have a question just ask. Everyone should be more than happy to help you learn your job.
Don’t let the regulars stress you out about their specific drinks. Most of them are spoiled by those of us who have been around for a while and before you know you’ll have their drinks waiting for them as they walk through the doors too.
Best of luck!!
