Hey, I got a promotion and I think it's kind of suspicious.
How do people normally become shift supervisors?
(I'm in the New York area if that has anything to do with it.)

Some get hired as shifts, some people get promoted based on attitude, aptitude and store need. Are you suspicious about why you were promoted or how it happened?

Both. I've only been a partner for 10 weeks. There are no limit to qualified people who have worked in NYC longer and harder than I have.
Also I think usually you're supposed to interview? I never had an interview, my manager just told me one day, Hey do you want a promotion?

How long you’ve worked doesn’t really matter, it more has to do with being trustworthy, a leader, and keeping the team up to standards. If you have peers coming to you now asking questions, or mirroring your behaviour/attitude I wouldn’t question it, you can even look at the transition from barista to shift in the ops excellence guide. There is a list of experiences that suggest when someone should be looking towards moving forward

it was kind of similar for me. however it was after a year. i never interviewed, i was just promoted after being asked if i would be interested in the position. we had a need for supervisors tho, so maybe there is a need in your area? either way, congrats on the promotion!

I told my manager to make me a shift. And she did. That was it basically. I did interview with my DM, but not my SM, although it became clear in that interview that DM thought my SM interviewed me. I've never even done a PDP in about two years. Lots of others qualify at my store, but I don't think any of them wanted it? I dunno.

The way you explained it is interesting. When my store needed shifts, they asked and those who responded basically got interviewed. Same for people looking to move up. I’ve never heard of someone just being asked and it immediately happening. Does your store or district need shifts? It could just be they see something in you and want you to pass that on, because of need, or because nobody else wants to and there’s an open position.

So in my district when you become a shift you need to change locations. So I'll be trained at my store, but won't be a shift at my current store.
But it also means that when I say there are way more qualified people I mean there are WAYYYY more qualified people who definitely wouldn't say no the raise in NYC.

My manager just asked me if I'd be interested in being a shift starting date x and I said yes. I asked him if I needed to interview or anything and he was like, nope, you'll start training on date x (Week 11 for me)
