So I've only been a shift for about a week and a half now at Starbucks and I've never worked a red cup day as I started in February. I come in at two and my store is still slammed and the store is a mess.
I throw myself on CS trying to fix the place but we're getting calls left and right, I'm having to call the other Starbucks because we ran out of almond milk. So basically, I was useless on CS at this point.
I put myself on bar because they're drowning, at around 4 we ran out of PEPPERMINT. Call other Starbucks, they have one bottle left. Oh boy. After one lady hears we ran out of peppermint at the window after she ordered a peppermint mocha and my sweet barista barista apologizes and gives her a recovery card. The lady THROWS THE DAMN THING BACK AT HER AND DRIVES AWAY.
At this point, I'm done. I'm ready to walk the hell out. People are being horrible to me and my baristas. We are running out of everything. I'm still trucking on.
Now here's where it starts to go even worse. There's a man in my lobby who is asleep in a chair, not a big deal. When he wakes up he says he's been waiting for a drink (he seems incoherent, possibly homeless) so I go over and ask him what he ordered. He's slurring his words like crazy and isn't making sense. Said he wants a frappucino. I make one for him and give it to him and leave him be.
We run out of fucking espresso beans around 5. Fucking. Espresso. I just told them to use one pound bags for now until I can contact our sister store. A barista that came in on her off day sits down and talks to the man for awhile. She comes to me, worried and says he pulled out a bottle of fireball and asked if she wanted some.
Fuck. The guy is drunk and has alcohol in the store. Since he wasn't bothering anyone I was like whatever he can stay. Then shit starts to hit the fan with him about ten minutes into my lunch. He's making girls trying to study in the lobby extremely uncomfortable. He keeps talking to them and tries to sit with them so they leave.
At this point I know I'm gonna have to ask him to stop. I couldn't get ahold of my manager or other store manager. I'm shaking terribly. It's my second week as a shift and I'm alone on red cup day without a manager or other shift. My manager finally calls me back and gives me the emergency hotline number to call and tells me if he won't listen that he can't have alcohol in the store and can't be disturbing people, he has to leave.
He's at the bar talking to my baristas so I go over to him and ask his name and try to be as nice as possible to him. I tell him he can stay as long as he wants he just can't have the alcohol in the store and has to take it outside. He doesn't listen, I don't think he even understands what I'm saying. I can smell the alcohol on his breath and us completely incoherent and not in the right state of mind.
He keeps asking for popcorn so I give him a bag and he starts opening it with his mouth making popcorn go everywhere and won't discard the alcohol and is being a disturbance.
I call the number and they tell me they're sending two officers over. I call my manager and let her know what's up. She then asks if im okay.
All night I've put up with the most ridiculous circumstances, rude customers, understaffed store, drunk man and I just couldn't take it anymore. I fucking lose it. I start to sob on the phone. I was beyond overwhelmed.
She helps calm me down, says some really sweet things. A barista then tells me the guy has left and the officers are here. I've never felt so many eyes on me from customers as I'm talking to the officer about what happened. Says they had a call from another business about the same guy doing the same stuff. Says he's getting a motel room nearby.
The rest of the night wasn't bad. An extra person helped us close that night, texted the shift that was opening what happened and he showed up to check up on me and the team.
Honestly, it could've gone worse. Red cup day made me a better supervisor.
Holy shit though I'm forever requesting red cup day off.
