...are we not supposed to be asking customers if they want milk in their coffee??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sadwalrus2
i'm talking about brewed coffee and iced coffee.

any time someone would order regular coffee or an ice coffee, i'd ask them if they wanted it sweetened (for the iced coffee) and if they wanted milk in it...my manager would loudly and with an annoyed tone talk over me and say to the customer "you can get milk and sugar at the end of the bar where the napkins are if you want it"????????

is this normal? i honestly don't shop at starbucks much so i don't know myself but i have never had gone to any coffee store where they don't ask me if i want milk or sugar, and have absolutely never been told i need to do it myself. i wouldnt go back to a place where i'm paying $4 for a coffee and i have to pour my own shit tbh lol....is this normal and im overreacting or is he wrong?

Usually don’t ask about it for brewed coffee since that’s what the condiment bar is for. Iced coffee it’s always good to ask since it comes sweetened and some people won’t want it and may want cream.

okay thanks so much!!

I only ask if they want room with brewed coffee. But I do ask if they want any kind of cream or milk or sweetener in their iced coffees

okay thanks for responding!! i really appreciate it

i always ask if they want room for brewed coffee and i ask if they want anything in the iced coffee or just black. most customers don’t realize the iced coffee by default is sweetened so its always good to clarify :)

I always just ask “would you like me to leave room for cream” and gesture to the condiment bar.
It reminds the people people who want us to do it for them to ask us to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then they’re not stuck at handoff asking for vanilla or something.

With brewed coffee you always want to ask a customer if they want room for cream! Some people will request the non-dairy milks on their drip coffees which is different.

i don’t during our rush since it’ll take more time and they can do it themselves, but if it’s slow i don’t mind doing it

I always ask if they need room! If they say yes do so and let them know where the bar is

Everyone at my store ALWAYS asks about cream or sugar in brewed/ice coffee. Although the “customer knows best,” the customer often forgets about cream and sugar, and a gentle question boosts their experience. In addition, a surprising amount of people do not know that iced coffee comes sweetened, and most people who are asked about the classic do not end up wanting it. No matter at the window or up on front, going the (tiny) extra mile to add a condiment to a drink enhances the customer experience.

My store asks, would you like any cream or sugar with that or would you like room for cream and sugar. We have a few regulars who like us to do it for them.

Bro. Are you too good to pour your own milk? What?
sadwalrus2 [OP] -2 points 3y ago
nah i'm fine with pouring milk, it's just that especially with the iced coffee it just doesn't make sense to me for a place that charges more to have you do it yourself when cheaper places like dunkin will? i feel like customers would probably not always pour in the same amount and then be upset over the inconsistency and not come back even if it isn't our faults. with the iced coffee tho the milk is supposed to go to a certain measurement, it's not gonna be the same if the customer is doing it because the ice is in it already you know? all my training was about consistency how it's important etc. and was specifically told then to ask. are you good lol

“i wouldnt go back to a place where i'm paying $4 for a coffee and i have to pour my own shit tbh”

This is why I asked. You specifically said you
weren’t fine with it lmao I was answering your question, yes you’re overreacting.
