How hard is it? Seriously??(self.starbucksbaristas)

I am pretty sure I have yet to work a shift where everybody who was scheduled actually shows up for the shift or stays the full shift. I’m so tired of people calling in or “I’m not feeling good “or “I’m really tired”.
Just show up for your damn shift people.
I work full time AND have managed to be here on time 3 times a week at 4:30am. You know why? Cuz I’m a freaking adult!
I’m done.

It suuuucks, I worked in a store where morale was shit so people called out all the time-- no one cared enough about each other so there was lots of calling in hungover and shit. And then it spiralled. The folks who DID show up to work started to burn out and get sick themselves because they were overworked from being short staffed all the time.
One thing to keep in mind tho, even if it's the same people every time, chronic illnesses are a thing and often folks don't feel like disclosing their diagnosis to just anyone. So just be careful who you vent to/when you vent, you never know who's dealing with personal shit.

I feel this, at my store morale is very low. Some baristas will call off because they don’t want to work with a certain Shift so when they are actually sick it seems like they are lying. The most unfortunate thing is it’s only two people on our shift team who are ruining morale. Really shows how impactful negative energy can be in a small space.

i used to have the same mentality as you but i’ve changed. you dont always know how someone is feeling unless you’re them. i know it sucks being understaffed and having to pick up the slack of others, trust me after almost 3 years i definitely know. you just never know how someone is feeling mentally, emotionally or even physically. the angrier you get at others the more likely you’ll be one of them one day. take a breather, you don’t have to say yes when it comes to staying later than your scheduled shift or coming in earlier than you’re scheduled.

I hear what your saying...but it seems to be the same people over and over. It just gets old. Not just at SBs but anywhere (retail/food related) that I’ve worked.

bring it up to your SM, express how you feel and how she can improve the work environment

Isn’t there a point where people have to be accountable? I understand people have chronic illnesses and rough stretches, but once it becomes more than a few times, how are you supposed to depend on them to show up?
silversungoddess1 points3y ago
I totally get that but like the other person who responded mentioned, if it’s the same person over and over...we had someone call today because they were “having a bad day”...and I totally get mental illness and chronic pain (I myself have anxiety, panic attacks, depression and ptsd) but when you consistently call out then it’s time to seek out EAP services for mental health or take a leave of absence to get things back together again. We all have bad days and still show up. If this person had been able to find coverage, I wouldn’t care as much that they needed a personal day to deal with whatever is going on...but when you leave us short handed when we need to deal with breaks and starting breakdown for close...it just gets frustrating.

We went nearly two months of this happening every day. Our new store manager said he was about to fire everyone if they kept calling in.
I think we finally managed to get passed it. Couple of people left and he hired some newbies and he really managed to turn around the store. Honestly it's amazing what having someone who generally cares about their employees does to a store. I went from nearly quiting to looking forward to going back to work.

I wake up at 3:30am five days in a row each week to open my store. People who come in every shift saying they're too tired to do tasks (really they just want to stand around and text) are such bs.
Pootz_6 points3y ago
It’s a problem in many stores because it’s tolerated.
Showing up to work is part of being a responsible adult. If you’re not going to do that, then you don’t deserve a job. Plain and simple. It’s unfortunately super hard to get fired from Starbucks because corporate doesn’t want to rock the boat. The irresponsible few make work miserable for the responsible majority.

I totally get you! At my old job we had this problem. I would never call in unless I got super sick. And I’ve never called in since I’ve been at Starbucks. But I t’s like how do you hire these people that always call in?! Then I realized, oh wait people lie when they get hired! Hopefully whoever make your schedules just cuts their hours

My manager is usually the one who leaves early or leaves for doctors appointments. I'm with ya dude. We make coffee for a living. Not that scary or hard
sandycat5552 points3y ago
The only good part about this, is racking up the hours filling in shifts. Lots of opportunities.
michaelaannm1 points3y ago
I come in 5-10 mins late every shift, but I also work harder then anyone there. Sometimes running from reg to bar and back because people want to gossip in back of house.

We have one barista who just transferred to the store a few weeks ago and she has already no-showed 4 GD times. I would have fired her already 🙄
littleolefee1 points3y ago
Well now I feel bad lol. It’s my first time calling in today but I’ve been throwing up legitimately all morning.
SR503 [OP]2 points3y ago
If you’re legit sick...I totally understand. If you’ve missed a shift, left early, or were late at least once a week for the last 4 months... sigh...
littleolefee2 points3y ago
Oh noooo haha. The most I’ve been late is by literally 5 minutes. I’ve never left early cause I mean I’m already there. I got out of bed to be there, might as well just stay the extra hours. It flies by when it’s busy. We have a girl that calls in once every week (she’s only works 2 days!!!) the new store manager finally stopped taking her off the schedule haha
daeguwu1 points3y ago
we recently hired a guy who used to work at a stand alone (i work at a target sbux) and he called out every single shift after he came in for one day.... smh

We have had so many call ins the last 3 weeks it’s insane. And everyone wants to go home early because they don’t feel well. This is getting out of control.
