What are you supposed to do if a customer blatantly disrespects you? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by eilselserrot
I’ve only been a barista for 3.5 months, but my new coworker recently got called retarded by a customer at the drive thru. What are you even supposed to do??? Can you defend yourself, or continue being polite?

My buddy got called a “fucking f*ggot” by some lady and he made direct eye contact with her, poured her drink down the sink and said “just for that you can leave”. I’m not sure what your manager is like but every manager I’ve had at starbs doesn’t let us be degraded and backs us up when we stand up for ourselves. It’s fkn awful what people say to us but it’s helping me build a backbone which I’ve never had so that’s really fun

Must be nice. Our DM always sides with the customer so we have to let them disrespect us and blah blah blah. She’s a bitch... we’re always wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Our SM will back us all day until it gets to corporate.

We take a lot of shit, but we are not expected to take blatant disrespect lying down. (Third place applies to partners as well as customers) that said, fighting fire with fire is NOT the way to go. Either walk away and let a(n) SSV/ASM/SM know of the situation, or tell the customer something along the lines of "I'm more than happy to help you, but if you continue to be disrespectful, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave"

Hah same thing happened to me. Was it over light ice? Is it the same guy? Tell them to leave. File an incident report. Hope they get banned.

This hurts, cause I'm definitely not a person who let's people walk over her. I trust that my shifts would back me up, but my SM? She'd take the customers side and to me that makes a fucking terrible manager. I'm sorry that happened to you.

Be have a no bullying policy for everyone in the store. I just always let the customer know and it gets worse I kindly ask them to leave.

I know it happens a lot working food service/retail, but it shouldn’t be tolerated. Tell your shift. If nothing else, they could takeover the interaction. As a shift, I don’t care how busy we are. I want to file an incident report saying that I calmly informed them that future disrespect will result in them being banned. Then it’s documented with corporate.

Personally, when people are rude I either give them a bit of a cold shoulder - just less friendly, smaller smile, shorter in speech, etc. Or I'll go over-the-top friendly just to annoy them haha
Now I've never had anyone be THAT rude- call me names. If they did, I think I'd ask them if they'd like to speak to my manager or just tell them I will not interact with them until they can treat me with respect. But until then, here's the drink I prepared. You can take the one I made you or not.
