scheduling questions (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by stonerscout455
i’ve seen some pretty horrific schedules in this group (i’m so sorry lmao) but i have a few questions...
i started with open availability as a part time partner since it was my only part time job at the time. i started by getting an average 15-20 hours per week (which i loved). now that i’ve put in a request for availability off weekends due to another job i got, i was scheduled to work all this weekend (6 days in a row, i don’t have a day off until thursday) and i was scheduled the weekend in which my availability was meant to start. i’m now right under the shifts on the schedules, the shortest week i’ve had in weeks has been 25 hours and since i work 25 hours on weekends, i’m working 50 hours a week. why would my boss be scheduling me so much? we have 30ish partners who have relatively decent availability yet i am always scheduled and getting the WORST shifts. my first time closing will be thanksgiving night, and i’m also working black friday. WHY?! someone help.
TL;DR: i work 50 hours a week. why is my boss scheduling me so much when we have plenty of partners. i’m exhausted 😖 and i’m working black friday night and day KILL ME.
(also please don’t judge me, i know my life could be WAY harder, this is just the first time i’ve held down a job after school (let alone two), and i’m a little overwhelmed at the moment)

Ask for three days off a week. That’s what I had to do.

32 hours in four days and a long weekend.

It was the best time of my life

I actually got to know the regulars.

wow that’s the best. nobody but shifts get 8 hour shifts in my store. it’s rare for a barista to get one
METAXILLUS 2 points 3y ago
My first store only did eight hour shifts.

I thought it was the norm until I got shafted and taken advantage of by a store that only gives out 5.75 shifts.

I have absolutely no idea who thought cheating partners like that was a good idea. It makes the job totally impossible. Ask anyone who gets 5.75 shifts if they like them. NO ONE LIKES THEM.

The only explanation that makes any sense to me at all, is that they have absolutely no idea how to manage lunch breaks. It’s pathetic.

yea but it’s also cuz they don’t want to deal with giving out half’s. also lotta partners complain that 8 hour shifts are draining which i understand.

I raised hell at my first store when they thought they didn’t have to give out second tens.

I lost my composure when they thought it was okay to make me wait seven hours for a lunch.

You know what my SM did?

Nothing.

I had to convince my SSVs that this was working against us.

It’s only draining if you get your lunch seven hours into the shift.

We get breaks BECAUSE the job is draining lol. Not knowing when you get a break IS draining.

Ahhh. Usually if someone is getting no hours despite availability it means that they suck. I know it blows you got scheduled out of avail but I guess in the least take it as a compliment that they want you around 🤷‍♀️

That sounds strange because don’t they have to pay overtime if you go over 40 hours? Either someone made a mistake, or you are the only reliable/good partner available then, or they really want you around?
METAXILLUS 1 points 3y ago
It makes no sense to me that the first thing they cut is routine and structure.

That’s a one way ticket to chaos city.

Probably cause there aren’t enough partners with availability those times. Your boss has ten thousand other things to worry about so don’t take it personal. They’re just building the schedule. Talk to your boss cause requests off/availability changes need to be approved by the SM and aren’t necessary just given to you

it was already approved! my SM & ASM had already approved it. and we have 30 partners in the store and at least half of them have very flexible availability, they’re just being scheduled for 11 hours for some reason.
