Training question???? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by alitta1998
So I was trained all last week and a couple the week before, but I feel like I haven’t learned much from my training. My trainer did an amazing job teaching me everything, but i feel like i haven’t learned much on making the drinks. Most of my training days i was stuck on a computer finishing training or on register. The thing that I have down is the whole register system, how to make coffee, teas, mocha and frappe roast, whips, and just all the basics. But I don’t know how to make drinks... my last training day I was on cold bar (making frapps) only for a hour my trainer told me that i am learning really fast and did good... I don’t know if I should ask for more training because I didn’t get to go hot bar or any other. I have my first shift this Thursday (without my trainer) and I talked to that manager that is going to be working with me that Thursday, she said I should be fine and that they all will teach me all the stuff i need to know.... I’m just really terrified. I want to make my team proud and not feel like I’m a bother because I don’t know much... should I be asking for more training shifts?? Or does everyone just learn as they go?? Any tips?? Just want advice or anything! Thank you I’m sure it will all work out l.

They won't put you on hot bar by yourself any time soon. I didn't touch it for 3 months after my training but then I was thrown on for a few hours.

Take a deep breath. You'll figure out what you don't know yet along with everyone else. Then you gotta push for bar practice while you're there so they will let you get better

Thank you so much this really eased my mind!! I was stressing because I felt I was so behind, but knowing that I’m happy.

You learn by asking questions overtime. My training was pitiful. I was trained at a different store. I never even did drive thru or hot bar once. Never even learned how to make whipped cream! I made cold bar drinks for a few hours and that was it. I was also the 2nd person my trainer ever trained. I basically had to be shown everything at my own store.

If you have fraps down, hot bar will be a cake walk. I'd say a Flat White is the only "difficult" drink. When someone orders a flat white, the will pull the lid and check it lol at least, at my kiosk they do.

When I was making fraps it was pretty simple! I got it really fast, but sadly I was only on cold bar for an hour...

A lot of the anxiety is self induced when first learning espresso. You just need a lil time :)

I'd suggest maybe googling pictures of drinks though, a visual aid might help a bit.

There's really only like 7ish drinks, but it's all in how customer's customize them, so once you get those 7ish drinks down, you'll be fine!

I’ve been learning as I go. To be honest with you it isn’t hard at all it’s pretty much spelled out for you on the cups. You just have to know shots and pumps. Whenever I’m on bar, I ask millions of questions and always double check before I do anything. I’ve been doing it since the first day they trained me on bar. Asking lots of questions is the best you can do! Once you learn the basics of each drink like a regular americano or a regular latte, it’s basically just like adding small things like a syrup or adding whip to the top.

Thank you! I have been definitely asking a lot of questions especially on register making sure I got the drinks right and repeating the ordered back. I will definitely keep asking questions! :)
