So... recently somehow... I open the milk carafes' lids and this is what I found... I'm trying to bring it to the general public's attention... how do you guys feel about this?
Thinking about is gross: people drink milk that has passed through a chunk of mold.
Edit: Apparently, it's styrofoam... soaked through continuously with milk... still gross.
i wanna barf omfg how do you take it off... wait i don’t wanna know🥴😖😭😨
PurpleTIEFighter8 points3y ago
If someone asked me to clean this I might honestly quit. Imagining scraping all of that off even with gloves is making me highkey want to die.
anon_29mo [OP]4 points3y ago
Yeah, no I was directed to just toss it out... no shock or nothing to my store manager 🙄 that’s why I posting it here
SCathers142 points3y ago
Unless you soak it in bleach for a while it will never be sterilized ... tossing is your best option!
anon_29mo [OP]-4 points3y ago
I think it’s the cold and the hot temperature that made it easy to twist off. I cleaned the lid of the sweet cream right out of the fridge and attempt to clean it first before making another batch.
espressnooo17 points3y ago
Guess what I'm checking tomorrow..
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr11 points3y ago
I want to too but I am scared shitless now...
dumbass_damien16 points3y ago
Guys, the lids have styrofoam in them... They're not supposed to open. If they do, then they need to be thrown out.
naadzzz14 points3y ago
oh my god i didn’t even knew you could open them??? ew wtf
caramel_machismo5 points3y ago
Yes, this comment right here. I am now terrified of what might lurk beneath all of our carafe caps.
silverleafsea13 points3y ago
B r o. This is fucking nasty. What. How did you even get the lid open? I thought it was solid plastic.
doe_skin7 points3y ago
Same?? I had no idea they could be opened. I thought they were just hollow plastic.
anon_29mo [OP]0 points3y ago
Nope
anon_29mo [OP]1 points3y ago
I tried prying the other ones open with a flat headed screwdriver and it wouldn’t budge. I just started shaking all the lids and tossing them if I heard something.
taylorann_200012 points3y ago
I just gasped out loud... I'm scared to find the same thing at our store tomorrow!
Edit: I showed this to some coworkers and was told it was just the insulation? Either way, yuck!
PurpleTIEFighter8 points3y ago
I hate you for making me look at this with my own two eyes. I'm beyond disgusted right now.
anon_29mo [OP]1 points3y ago
Well now you know, I saved your life.
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr7 points3y ago
I thought I was good for taking off the little rubber ring and washing it separately...
anon_29mo [OP]1 points3y ago
Nope, there’s a slit on top that traps the milk, and that’s why this happens
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr1 points3y ago
How to get it open though?? Just like, pry it with something thin or something?
anon_29mo [OP]1 points3y ago
Idk the sweet cream one I took it out of the fridge and washed it under hot water, just twisted it off. Think it has to do with the temperature
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr1 points3y ago
Ahhhh. Thanks
psyche30906 points3y ago
YESSSSSSS! Omg now more people know. We had one and I was trying to scrub it and it just came apart. Honestly nothing gross phases me but THE SMELL was the most haunting thing ever. I made everyone share the horrific moment, and I wanted to take shower it smelled and looked so disgusting. These lids need to be switched out/thrown out like every few months I’m convinced.
anon_29mo [OP]-1 points3y ago
YOU HAD TO WASH IT?!?!?! I was just directed to throw them out. My manager just got replacements. Although, there were still some with mold in the batch of clean ones.
*why would you smell it?! It’s bacteria, can make you sick. I don’t think Starbucks would compensate for that.
coffeecatmom5 points3y ago
That’s not mold. There is styrofoam in there. You must’ve had a crack in your lid.
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr5 points3y ago
Ok, we've tried to open the lids with no success.
Maybe those were broken or cracked? (Hopefully 🤞🤞🤞)
anon_29mo [OP]3 points3y ago
I’m not really sure, try putting it in the fridge and then dousing it in hot water. But if you just wanna know if there’s mold, just shake it, you can always hear the block of mold moving.
caramel_machismo2 points3y ago
I know there's stuff in our lids, I can feel it when I shake them. I always thought it was a weight in them. Fuck.
anon_29mo [OP]0 points3y ago
Nope, it’s built up milk
mxs42354 points3y ago
Styrofoam. Fun fact, if you hear it, toss it. All milk carafes have a year printed under them too and should be checked/chucked regularly.
emmmmmmmmmmmmmmie5 points3y ago
We have the same carafes at our (not Starbucks) shop, we just pry the kids apart every night and wash in super hot water and then soak overnight again in boiling hot water. Rinse and repeat if lids still reek
anon_29mo [OP]2 points3y ago
Teach me.
emmmmmmmmmmmmmmie1 points3y ago
The edge of the top of the lid parallel to the turning ridge (if that makes sense) is the easiest place to pull, just hook your fingernails and give it a yank
captain-slammi5 points3y ago
You should post this to r/Starbucks and let more baristas know
jsummer144 points3y ago
BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!!! check my most recent post
MikraeAppassionata4 points3y ago
I had no idea the carafe lid could separate... I'm checking the next time I'm in, for sure. I feel like my skin is trying to leave my body I'm so grossed out.
anon_29mo [OP]3 points3y ago
Try shaking them and see if you can hear a sound.
bwlldr4 points3y ago
Buying all new carafes next week....
dearDem3 points3y ago
I just ordered all new lids for my store.
The ordering site sells them separately FYI! No need to buy all new carafes if you just have to replace the tops.
anon_29mo [OP]1 points3y ago
I asked my manager to order different styles of carafes and he said he’s not in charge of that at Starbucks 🙄 Bc there are still going to be mold if the company is still using the same model.
