Holidays in the apron (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by GibletHeadedSkullKid
Hi y'all! I'm a new bean here, haven't even had my orientation yet. But I picked the worst time to get hired at a company that's open 365 days a year... A week before Thanksgiving. So I was wondering what the policy is regarding scheduling on the holidays. I don't mind working on holidays, with the exception of Christmas. And the anxiety of not knowing is driving me bonkers. So friends, how does scheduling for the holidays typically work? Am I totally screwed being at the bottom of the totem pole?

Christmas Day to my understanding is volunteer only, and not every store is open.

My store isn't even open on Christmas, but each store has a different policy. Just ask your store manager. My store doesn't discriminate against new people with scheduling on holidays. We choose some we have to work and some we get off.

If your store is open on Christmas, it is done by a sign up sheet, only people who volunteer to work. You are not required to work...if the store can’t get enough volunteers it will ask other stores for volunteers. Managers do things differently, but my manager wants us to work at least two of the holidays. You don’t have to worry though cause plenty of people actually want to work holidays to get holiday pay and the tips are better.

I work at a kiosk and holidays are mandatory for everyone. Only holiday we're closed on is Christmas. If we call out on a holiday, we are automatically fired. Our manager was kind enough to not work anyone over 3 hours that day, though.

Every holiday is mandatory???
Yikes.
I have 9 days off starting Saturday. I have kids, zero chance I could work for your manager.

We had a sign up sheet, everybody just had to sign up for at least 4 holidays. Just talk to your manager!

It’s possible people already volunteered to work those holidays for the holiday pay. If you do have to work, it’s usually a short shift and the store hours are changed for the holiday to make them shorter. Most managers require partners to work at least 3 holidays, but I would ask your manager what their policy is. They already created the thanksgiving schedule since they do it 3 weeks out so its better to ask soon

Partners are typically required to work three of the major holiday days, including Thanksgiving, black friday, Christmas eve, Christmas day, NYE and NYD.

We had a signup on our back office so we all could request.

BUT you're brand new and are still in training, so you likely won't have to worry about Thanksgiving especially. Xmas and NYD, I'd talk to your SM.
