I start my first day that isn’t training today and I’m having bad anxiety and I’m scared I’ll have a panic attack at work. Any tips to avoid this? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Your next break, go someplace quiet even if it’s the bathroom or just your break room. Breathe in, hold it for three seconds (I like to count in my head) and then breathe all the way out, completely empty your lungs, and repeat. The first time I had a panic attack I was working alone at my sbux kiosk and it was so severe management of the safeway the kiosk was in called an ambulance because I couldn’t catch my breathe and we weren’t sure what was going on. The ambulance driver sat with me and practiced this breathing technique with me. Now I take medication for my generalized anxiety so I rarely get panic attacks, but I find it so helpful for when I start getting anxious.

Edit to add: also, remember these wise words my trainer told me seven years ago; in the end, we’re just serving coffee. No one dies if we make a mistake, and if someone freaks out, they’re an asshole and not worth your mental health.

Wow , I'm sorry that happened to you. I used to work in a Kiosk now I work at a very busy drive thru store right by the highway lol. Our jobs can be very stressful and I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds these tips very helpful 😊🤘

As awful as it was at the time, than panic attack was probably one of the best things that could have happened. I had been ignoring my anxiety and getting down on myself for feeling anxiety with no cause, it finally forced me to realize that this is a problem I have and the only thing that doesn’t make sense is not helping myself. Plus it made me realize how lucky I was in the people I’m surrounded by, everyone really stepped up to support me. Love and hugs back at you busy buddy!

Hey I feel you! We will get through this anxiety and do great today :) always stay positive! Also what I was told is that they only have you do things that you know how to do and always ask questions if you don’t know how to do it.

I have really bad anxiety so I know that none of us can really say anything to make you feel much better...but it’s honestly not bad. I felt like I was gonna throw up but I survived. Ask coworkers questions even if you feel it’s annoying, because it’s better to ask than to mess it up and then you have to spend more time fixing it. And don’t take it personally if they sound snappy, it’s just because they’re trying to answer your question while trying to do a bunch of things.

Yeah, keeping a smile on your face is probably one of the best things you can do. Just know your day will sooner or later come to an end.

I really like your attitude and as simple as this job seems not just anyone can do it. Your post has paused me to think about my own situation and anxiety issues.

Communicate! Especially with your SM and your Shifts who will be working with you. Being up front and honest about your needs, their expectations, and what your plan will be should something come up while you are on the clock.

Not the same situation but related-I am currently changing medication which tends to make me prone to dramatic mood swings as my body goes through withdrawal. I am so glad I took the time to have the conversation with the Shifts that supervise me. It was initially uncomfortable for me to bring up but it has definitely helped me feel more at ease at work!

I have two more days with my trainer. It will be hard to not have my crutch there like I have had. Who will I hand my gallon of milk to when I am done with it :) Good luck
