How do I communicate with her?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by loveylevi17
My coworker is deaf/hard of hearing, and I’m trying to think of the best way to communicate with her. She generally has a little board she writes on, and has customers write on. But I’m nervous that during a rush I might not be able to effectively communicate with her. I’m in no way trying to say she’s incapable- I’m trying to think of the best way to be as communicative with her as possible. I’m tempted to try to learn sign language? Am I being too weird? I’m an anxious person. I don’t want to be the Bitchy New Girl.

Maybe make cards with common request you need during a rush?

That’s a really good idea! Could you give me an example of what would be the best requests? I haven’t really worked a full shift yet

Restocking cards like "more ____" and you can write in milk or ice or whatever it is that's needed. Basic drink cards if an order is messed up or drinks need to be made on the fly. And a card to check in with them! Just something like "are you okay?" "Do you need me to do anything?"

Ask her what her preference is. Just make sure that she knows you're asking because you want to make her happy not that you find her less capable.

That’s exactly what I wanted to avoid. I’m going to try that when we work together

LEARN ASL!!!! That’s the best way to communicate even if it’s the basic!! If some signs are too hard to learn start with finger spelling aka the alphabet!!
