Should I talk to my manager about one of our shift leads??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sadwalrus2
Alright so basically our store has recently opened -- the vast majority of us have no Starbucks experience whatsoever. Even though our manager clearly doesn't like Casey, Casey because a shift lead because she has previous Starbucks experience.

Well I've closed with Casey twice so far. First time we left over an hour late because half the time she was talking to someone and bitching about how she wanted to quit and was considering suing because she didn't get manager's pay during training. Also she charged a man $50 to put on a gift card which ended up not going through correctly (which the system warned her...it told her that it wasn't approved but she just hit no for the three separate warnings she got without reading them) and the store director had to fix it for her. She is incredibly rude to me and to other customers -- for example she loudly said that a customer was an asshole and that they should go fuck themselves all because they politely asked if we were closed or not. If I'm doing something she didn't explicitly ask me to do, even if it's a part of my job description, she walks over and rips it out of my hands.

Well today she ended up dropping one of her notebooks onto the ground (which also hasn't been cleaned in days), and then proceeds to drop the notebook, and with the side that fell onto the floor, directly puts it onto the cutting board. Didn't wash the board afterwards. Didn't wash it at any point that day. This got me pretty upset because at my other job I work with some sick people and I know that if someone is coming it immune compromised, shit like that can make them seriously ill. After I told someone to go clean the oven she told them not to -- because there's marks on the oven she thinks it shouldn't be cleaned anymore. The stuff she "cleaned" still had shit and residue caked onto it (how the fuck did you get shit caked onto the tea holders???). Uses the sanitizer rags meant for cleaning the wands and cleans the counters and shit with them and puts them back. Half the stuff in the fridge is opened and undated and she doesn't notice. Etc etc.

I figure natural consequences would play out and the manager would come in and see that she did a shit job, but me and the other people scheduled with this """shift lead""" have picked up the slack for her. The cutting board thing really upset me because it's just one example of her blatantly disregarding any concept of food safety. Someone is going to get sick because she admittedly is being lazy and doesn't feel like cleaning lmao??

They're so short staffed though and I know if I mention something to my manager and she mentions it to Casey, Casey is going to know it's me that told her. What do you think I should do? Am I exaggerating? Other people seem to like her so I'm worried about alienating everyone.

My shift lead was only rude to customers and was properly reprimanded. Yours sounds like a nightmare with attitude and negligence for hygiene. We are all on cameras or at least your store should be. Find the date and time it happened and pull the tapes

There are no security cameras yet. Thanks for your response though. :)

In all honestly this seems like a case you can even open with HR. It sounds like she is willfully ignoring policy, and you can get in a lot of trouble for badmouthing the company to customers.
Hold your people accountable, even if they're above you! Just because she's a shift doesn't mean she can just do whatever she wants and it sounds like she thinks she can.

In my experience telling helped

Do you think I have grounds to mention anything to her tho.

I wouldn’t stress to much about whether you have the “grounds” or not to tell on someone blatantly disregarding her job as a shift supervisor. (But you’re so absolutely have plenty to warrant it)
Starbucks prides itself on coaching and being able to hold people above you and below you accountable without getting in trouble.
I would talk to your SM about it, but start a notebook documenting everything, take pictures too if you can, and if nothing is done you can take it to partner ethics and compliance and they will help as long as you’ve tried the manager route.

If Casey tries to pull anything or treat you like shit because she finds out you “told” on her, document it.
It’s retaliatory behavior, and completely unacceptable. Tell your SM about her taking it out on you, if the SM doesn’t do anything then either go to your DM or ethics and compliance. Make sure to use language like retaliatory, and express that she’s creating a negative work environment that you fear may impact the ability to maintain the third space.

You got this; nobody should be allowed to risk the health and safety of you or the guests.

Hopefully this helps a bit, I had to do something similar with another shift and the only thing that helps is having everything documented somewhere. You might have to write a statement to send to your DM. You can even have another barista write one as well if you know they’ve seen it to. And those can be anonymous.

Good luck
