New barista, update (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by T3mperature
Hi! So I had a previous post about being a new barista struggling to learn the drinks and being left alone for like 30 minutes at a time with no clue what I'm doing.

So my store is inside a grocery store, and my trainer said she has to work somewhere else in the store on Friday. And that I have to work the entire shift alone. I've only been on bar making drinks for a total of like 3 hours now and I still need help with almost every single one. When I expressed my concern with working a whole shift alone, I was told I could call her for help in an emergency.

I know it takes a while to get comfortable on bar, but I don't even know how to make half the drinks yet. I dont know how I'm supposed to manage a whole shift by myself. Especially on Black Friday. Honestly considering quitting because these expectations seem ridiculous and the stress of it is gonna kill me. Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy?

That seems...highly unreasonable. I never worked for a license store so I’m not sure how chain of command works, but is there anyone you can call to express concerns? I think as long as you’re calm you have a valid argument. Black Friday, especially in a store, is going to be bananas.

I tried talking to my starbucks manager but I can move up to talk to the store manager too. Like I can make some of the drinks but calling over the stores PA system everytime I have a question seems ridiculous. Working shifts alone seems to be normal for this store, I just feel like I'm not at all prepared for it. Thank you for the advice!!

That’s what sucks about licensed stores. Minimal training and shifts alone. If you think you’ll enjoy the job and don’t mind a slight pay cut, corporate stores definitely do not throw you into the fire like that!

Yeah I've thought about applying to one of the corporate stores. I'd just feel so bad leaving my current store though since they just lost 2 employees and are super understaffed. Its definitely something I'm considering though.

That's not your problem. The way they are treating you is why they keep losing people and are understaffed.

That's unfortunate for them but it does seem like there might be a reason they just lost those employees, the stress might have gotten to them to. Losing a third so quickly could give them a hint that they need to change something, even more so if you give an explanation of your concerns. Whatever you do, good luck and think about yourself. No matter how good of a company or job it is, it's still just a company and a job and at the end of the day if you die, they just replace you. So take care of yourself.

um..what??? i work at a grocery store kiosk and it's like a huge deal that we're never supposed to have less than two people in the kiosk except for like bathroom breaks and stuff like that. and i definitely wasn't left by myself until i was certified. that's definitely not okay and your manager definitely doesn't have their shit together if single person shifts are a regular thing. how the fuck are you supposed to run pos and make drinks at the same time without the whole thing turning into a trash fire?? just the thought of it gives me anxiety.

Haha yeah we cant really run to restock anything until the next person shows up for their shift. And we are expected to work late (past out scheduled time) for an hour or however long it takes to get all that done. It's a problem lol.

Apparently I'm "certified" now but I was certified after making like 10 total drinks lol so I feel like it doesnt mean much. Only time I've seen more than one person working the kiosk is when I have been there training. They just spent like 2 weeks training me on customer support for some reason and only like half a day on bar.
