Starting tomorrow! (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by havanabananna
Hey everybody I have my first day tomorrow!!
I’m really excited and I have to say I’m kind of scared, is there any tip I should know before going in?
The manager said the training would be “extremely intense”.
Thank you!!

**DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS!!!**

Your manager was right about it being intense - it was for me and I have many years of experience in espresso/customer service. Don't be too scared though, I also hadn't worked in a year when I started at sbux and I didn't actually *have* a trainer, was kinda just let to figure a lot out on my own for the most part lol.

And not sure if by "first day" you mean on the floor, or it's your *actual* first day, in which case you'll probably only be doing the online training (maybe even for a few days). But when you hit the floor your gonna get fed a ton of information. The key is to not let that - mixed with the craziness of how busy your store is - overwhelm you.

You're most likely going to have to ask lots and of questions and THAT IS OK. Everyone you work with was a green bean at one point so don't feel shy/awkward/embarrassed/ashamed to ask questions. I can't stress this enough. I have a team mate who started 4 days before me and he's super shy so he wasn't asking questions when he first started. Now we're both 2 months in and all he really does besides ring people up is slowly wipe down counters and sweep. Granted, he's new at learning bar, but there's always tons of stuff that needs to be done, and he's either not sure what that stuff is on any given day or he doesn't know how to do it, so he kinda just stands there, continually wiping down counters and leaves everything else for everyone else since he didn't ask any questions in the beginning he's too embarrassed that he doesn't know how or what to do now that we're 2 mos in.

So just remember, ask questions and don't stress yourself out too much.

And also, try to have fun! It creates an awesome environment for you and your teammates and the customers definitely pick up on that and enjoy it as well!

Thank you so much for this big reply!
Actually I’ve got a job in France so we don’t have any online days first, we just go straight into it. So today was my first day in the morning I learn about all the theory stuff and where everything was and then after my break I was already learning how to make drinks and tend the bar (call me the master of Cappuccinos!!), I didn’t interact with any client though it was just me and my coworkers when it was slow! Otherwise I was just wiping down or observing.
So instead of staying there and just watching them when there was a lot of people in line I asked if I could tidy up the store or wipe down tables and they were really happy about it!
But you are so so right about asking questions! After reading the many rules and pamphlets they gave me in the morning I asked questions about security, hygiene, etc...
And when I asked where was the fire alarm and the closest fire extinguisher the manager said he was really impressed because it was the first time the trainee asked by themself!!
No I have a lot of studying to do but my colleagues and manager are so nice I can’t wait to go back again!
Thank you for your help it definitely paid off!

Definitely one of the biggest things is to never assume, always ask questions if you are unsure. And when you get stressed out, (it's part of the job), remember that at the end of the day you will home. As a trainee just put in your maximum effort and always use downtime on the floor to practice putting drinks in or beverage sequencing. You'll probably learn most things from doing them rather than reading. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your help! Asking questions was definitely the right thing to do, I felt kind of dumb sometimes for asking such obvious things ahah but I think my managers and colleagues are really happy with me!

Honestly it depends on who your trainer is. My trainer happened to be a old friend from middle school and she was very nice about everything and informative so I learned fast. I’ve heard of other people who were not trained well though (there’s one coworker who has been working here over two years and still doesn’t know how to make drinks because she was trained horribly). My advice to you would be to ask a lot of questions, make drinks over and over again until you’ve gotten it all down, study the recipes, and don’t panic. If you start to feel anxious ask your manager if you can take a little breather. 🙂

You are totally right! My manager is amazing and my colleagues are really helpful so after my first day I can already make a few drinks, I feel so proud of myself and I know it’s all thanks to them! Thank you!!
