workplace harassment help? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lalaland_lauren
so i have no idea how to deal with this but its starting to affect my mental health again so here goes.

i’ve been a barista for eight months now, and since i’ve started there are a few partners that just never liked me due to a medical condition that leads to call outs and early release (don’t know if they’re on reddit or this thread so i’m gonna try to keep it as vague as possible). however, there’s this one partner in particular that makes my shifts very difficult and makes me feel absolutely useless to the company.

i’m usually always on drive thru register or front pos since i work peak, but i’ve worked only those positions almost every single shift for about four or five months now so i get restless and i do what i can to help our times (ie grab a mobile order when everyone’s busy and it’s sitting at the mobile plane) but she constantly belittles me for “being in the way” which i’m not and “making everyone else work harder”. as of recent events, she’s said much worse that is blatant harassment and was all documented.

i’ve reported her to partner resources already since she’s training right now to be a SSV, and i’ve told my SM and DM about issues with her previously but issues with her are getting bad again and we just got a new SM. she said she’s going to handle it with the DM together but i don’t know if i should leave it all to them since it’s much worse now? what do i do? people on here are so much nicer and i just wish i had a team that supports me like everyone else does

*edit: as i mentioned that i usually call out, i havent called out in two months except for being hospitalized, and none of these attendance issues are her business nor is addressing them to me or demanding anything of me which she has done*

I would say definitely seek a higher power if it doesn't get handled in the next week, but idek where or how you'd go about doing that.

Until then though, I might even suggest talking with the partner about it?

I know it'd be super uncomfortable, but so is having to put up with her shit.

All you'd have to do is explain how the way she treats you is not only not ok but it also does a disservice to the whole store since it greatly brings down your confidence. Maybe explain to her your medical condition if you're comfortable with that so she has a better idea of what you're going through so that she knows despite your condition you're always trying your best and tell her you'd appreciate it if she could be more understanding because your a team and team mates need to be bringing each other up, not tearing each other down. Then ask her what you could be doing differently that might help her out more (this is more of a way to just even the playing field of this discussion since it seems you're already doing everything you can). Your manager could even be there in case mediation is needed. That way too if the harasser doesn't live up to there end of the discussion, your manager could have more reason to step in more actively as opposed to "dealing with it" from the inside like with the dm or whatever.

I just always feel like open and honest discussion are the easiest and healthiest way to deal with things.

Sorry you're having to go through this though.

i’ve talked to everyone about my condition just to clear everything up because, at one point, everyone hated me for my call outs. but once i talked to them they were like “ok well i’m sorry about being an ass, i understand now.” i still come in despite that now while i just wait for a medical accommodation to go through, so if the ssv sees fit they’ll let me go.

i have tried to talk to her, hence the as of recent events. her words exactly “I reeeeeeally don’t care about what you have to say to me, you can even go tell jarid (our DM) and call corporate to cover your ass, i don’t care at all” so talking to her wouldn’t exactly help much since she said her piece.

WOW. That is *beyond* awful... honestly, since that's the case, I would probably consider transferring. Of course *you* shouldn't have to be that has to go through all that trouble and inconvenience, but that seems to be the best (and healthiest) option imo.

You don’t have to disclose your condition if you don’t want to. You might not have the confidence to do this because we’re pressured to go along with everything and not make waves but you can say “Hey, I don’t like how you’re talking to me right now. I find it disrespectful.”

Or my favorite
“Hey! I have five words for you: please be nice to me.”

But also definitely keep talking to management and PRSC and keep reporting this until it changes
