\*Customer texting the entire time of interaction, holding their phone in both hands and not looking at me\*

Me: Okay, that will be $4.92

\*Customer still just standing there, hands glued to their phone. No eye contact\*

Me: . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. . . . .. . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . so sorry to interrupt but that will be $4.92. When you get a chance.

Customer: Uhh I have been standing here, waiting to pay. Your terminal is not doing anything. Have you not heard of Apple pay before?

Thanks. My eye is twitching now.
Beverice 2 points 3y ago
I always just ask "How will you be paying today?" Because there are too many methods now. People coming in paying with their fucking watch lol

My manager told me that you don’t collect the points unless you’re paying with the cash from your Starbucks card, so there’s no point to scanning the Starbucks card unless they pay with it.
mango_drango 61 points 3y ago
This is true, but some people refuse to believe it! It’s great!

This is hilarious.

I have a regular customer who makes me scan his empty app every time because he swears up and down that he gets points that way. I was super surprised when he told me that and also super gullible because I believed him. I thought it was a glitch with the system because it didn't make any sense to me.

The rewards system used to work this way. Every time you scanned your card you would earn a star, and when you hit 13 stars you would get a reward. This incentivized people to split their four drink order into four separate transactions to maximize their number of stars, or else you get the same number of stars spending $3 on a coffee as $70 on an order for the office. Which is why they changed it. Unfortunately, not everyone got the memo.

You still had to pay with the app though but people would pay for each drink individually to get however many stars. Just scanning the empty card never got stars as far as I remember.
interyx 3 points 3y ago
It would still count as a transaction I believe, because it didn't matter how much you spent. As long as you scanned it I think it counted, even if you paid with cash after that, not that it matters much.

I had a woman the other day get *mad* at me when I explained that she has to load money on the app in order to get points. The interaction went like this.
Her: *shows me app with $0 loaded on* I scan this to get points right?

Me: yep! You have to load money on it first though.

Her: *surprised pikachu face* ummm, that’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard.

Me: well, the app doesn’t really know if you actually paid for your order if you were to scan the barcode and pay with cash. You have to pay through the app. I can load money on there for you if you’d like.

Her: no! It’s pointless to use the app then! *proceeds to pay for order with cash*

It baffles me that she didn’t just load the money on her card and get the points, when either way she ended up paying the same amount for her order. Also, did she just expect to scan the barcode and get points? Despite the app saying “pay in store”?

Technically true, but some regulars just don't like uploading 20dollars onto their card/app, despite the fact they probably spend 20dollars or more a week. They just prefer to have no money on it and "collect the points" eg upload exact total to app, then take it off again. More of a hassle and is a pain to explain it to them.

I work at a licensed starbucks and every time I try to explain to them that you have to pay with the app to earn stars they refuse to believe me even though I’ve been working as a barista for 2+ years. They swear up and down that the cooperate location can do it. She kept looking at my name tag because she thought I was lying and I’m guessing she wanted to complain. I never heard from her again lol

if anyone every tries anything with me ab the starbucks app i’ll pull my phone right out and show them how to use jy
daniwhizbang 27 points 3y ago
How do you collect points and NOT pay? Isn't that the whole basis of the star system? Pay with your app and get points?
kpriestess19 [OP] 13 points 3y ago
You scan the app twice. Say an order is 5 dollars total, you save the order, you upload 5 dollars to app, customer pays cash or card, then you go back to saved order, customer scans app and takes money off. Customers refer to it as getting points (even though their technically still paying money with app). Its a right hassle to do and explain to them, but allot of customers in my area are aware of it and choose to do it. They just don't like the idea of having any spare money on their app.
westhawk777 10 points 3y ago
You can reload without saving the order! Go through reload as normal, for say $5. Their total will be items + reload $5. Then type in $5 and however they’re going to pay and complete that part of the transaction (maybe they give you $5, drawer will open at the end). Then scan the app, which is now reloaded with $5 to pay for the items. The drawer will open and they will have paid with their app!
invisiblemonsters3 7 points 3y ago
I used to do that but if the customer pays with a credit card (let’s say their drinks are $5 and they want to reload $5), the receipt will read “Total Transaction Amount: $10” and some customers would accuse me of charging their credit card for $10. Even though it would also clearly say “Credit Card 5438: $5, Starbucks Card 1234: $5” which is exactly what they wanted 🤦‍♀️
westhawk777 5 points 3y ago
Ahh yeah I get that sometimes but our machines print stickers as soon as we save an order so I try to never save an order.
petegaveglia 11 points 3y ago
and then the customers get mad at me,, like dude you shouldve told me. now I have to refund you, then do the whole transaction again. Not the best when theres 10 people in line
Alliiicatttt 4 points 3y ago
Yes ! Absolute worst is when the just hold their app up to the scanner “has it scanned yet? Why isn’t it scanning” well maybe if you moved it around and actually lined up the scanner (that is conveniently located for you to scan) it would. But wait, we literally have to wipe their ass for them. I forgot. Move the fucking phone around it’s not that difficult.

Or they don’t tell you Apple Pay. I can’t read your fucking mind.

I know it doesn’t collect points with a credit/debit card but I think it does with cash. Not fully sure though
