Advice for long hours (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by littleolefee
I’ve just become a barista trainer and I’ve been working a lot. Like, a lot. I usually work 25-30 hours a week which is good. Lately, I’ve been working from the morning 4:30 AM- 1/2 PM and then 4 PM - 9/9:30 PM. So essentially the entire day and I’m just getting really exhausted. I know we work with coffee but what are some ways that y’all get yourself to feel energized???

Is that even legal? You’re working those two shifts within the same day?

Everyday for the past 2 weeks. Idk if it’s legal lol

Completely legal, America has very few worker protections about scheduling. (unless you're a doctor or a pilot, or trucker)

It's also against policy. You're supposed to have a minimum of 8 hours between your scheduled clock out and your next scheduled clock in, and a maximum of 8 hours in a single day. But that's just policy, SM can disregard that, but too avoid burn out and tired complaining baristas they rarely do.

Oh yeah. I didn’t think it was illegal but I felt like it was maybe against policy. I mean regardless it’s money so I won’t turn it down. It’s just as the hours turn to days and the days have turned to weeks that I am feeling not so peppy at all and not really energized but that is also because I only have like a 5 hour window for sleep everyday

I worked split shifts when I was still at Starbucks a couple times but I did like 4:30-9 AM then came back to close but that shit is exhausting. Just because it’s not illegal doesn’t mean that it should be allowed especially so frequently.
Money is money but burnout is real.
