Names (self.starbucksbaristas)

Soo my manager just informed us that we cannot say “can I get a/your name for this order” on dt because it is not personal enough. I’m sorry but I’ve got enough to worry about when I’m on dt so sorry if I don’t want to say hi my name is ___ what’s yours? Anyone else think this is strange? My normal spiel is “it’s a great day at Starbucks, my name is ____ what can I get started for you today? And I then end of the order I ask “can I get a/your name for this order?”

My store doesn't take names at the drive thru lol

You take names for drive? We always say “thanks for choosing our sbux, or hi this is ___ what can i get started for ya today” etc

Shift Supervisor here, your normal spiel sounds perfectly fine to me. The “it’s a great day at Starbucks” part, even if entirely false, is a cute catchphrase and that would make people smile in the drive thru. My store has been trying to implement taking names in dt, and almost nobody does lol. A lot of our customers just respond with “....but why? I’m in the drive thru?” or “if I wanted to give you my name I’d come inside” so we don’t really ask anymore cause most people are annoyed or confused by it. But, even my old store manager said “can I get your name for your order?” when she was on dt so I don’t think it’s wrong. Honestly your store’s customer connection score may be a little low right now and your manager is trying to find anything at all to raise that score.

Yup... we are required to take them. One shift I had forgotten for a couple of cars and my dm happened to come through. She was not very happy that I didn’t take her name. In my defence she was talking to someone through her cars speakers so I couldn’t even hear her order clearly so I didn’t want to inconvenience her more with the name thing. But yeah now we can’t even ask for names in a normal manor 🙃.

You’d think as a DM she would know how rude it is to talk to someone over your cars Bluetooth while in a drive thru...

I don't like telling people my real name. It makes me uncomfortable, so if I'm forced to do this...do I make a fake name?
OddOtter19 5 points 3y ago
You can totally give us any name you want. You can make up the most ridiculous name and we will roll with it.
[deleted] 3 points 3y ago
Unless you make a ridiculously fake name, like “bad bitch” or something, we will call out whatever name you give us.

In both districts I have worked in for the last 6 years they have wanted us to get names. At the end I just ask for a name for the order. Things change so frequently at Starbucks your manager prob will prob say something different in a few weeks .

My store was doing DT names for a hot minute. Then we got a new boss 😹
_Pulltab_ 3 points 3y ago
Sometimes I start off by asking who I’m speaking to or saying, “Hi, this is Pulltab, who’s this?” Other times at the end of the order after I read it back I just say, “what’s your name?” And then say, “ok, Joe, your total is blah blah blah”.

For me I think it’s just about shaking it up so you don’t start sounding like a robot.

Our store does that “what’s your name” thing and almost everyone I’ve talked to that has gone through my drive thru said they get creeped out by it

We actually received several phone calls from people complaining that it’s invasive and unnecessary. Also, it makes us look like we are unorganized and can’t keep track of orders without names, so we stopped. Thank god. Most awkward I’ve ever felt in my life
BriannaY70 2 points 3y ago
I just say “Hi thanks for choosing Starbucks! What can we get started for you?” Or if I’m trying to stall them to give whoever is on window more time, I say “Hi thanks for choosing Starbucks! How are you doing today?” And then they usually ask back and then I go into the “what can we get started for you?”
PurpleTIEFighter 2 points 3y ago
Don't we have enough to worry about if we're solo DT anyway?
jacksondrose 1 points 3y ago
Unless you have two order boxes that merge into one lane (Chick-fil-A, McDonald's) this makes no sense whatsoever.
