I've Made a habit of asking for every single drink. Far too many hot caramel macchiatos down the drain...

Yep, my store does this as well. Some people look at us like we’re stupid when we ask if they want their drink hot or iced, but the overwhelming amount of people who go “oh, iced! thanks!” far outweighs the others, and it saves a lot of money/time/effort from literally going down the drain.

Funny thing I’ve noticed here as a barista in Japan, Japanese people state their size and whether hot and cold by themselves without needing to ask. However, it’s the older people or people who don’t come to starbucks often that don’t, of course. But when you ask them or tell them, they apologize for not knowing instead of blaming us and look at us as if we don’t know what we offer.

When I lived in Japan I noticed that too. Whenever I ordered or looked at the menu it often specified hot or cold and I could hear people in line say hot or iced pretty naturally. I know I had my アイスホアイトモカ down living there. While being a barista in the states everything is so ambiguous which is difficult. Like we have it stating as an iced tea lemonade on my menus and people order it like that but then I’m trying to figure out what kind of tea they want.

Also breaks my brain when they point at a frappuccino. ‘Ice blended beverages’. And they ask, is this available in hot. For example dark mocha chip frappuccino. Im like, the closest to it hot is a cafe mocha? And they end up going with something completely different. Also cute how a guy ordered a chai tea with a shot and I taught him it was called dirty chai overseas. He was blown away. Japanese people are adorable to take orders from.

I’ve never worked at a coffee chain but I worked in food service and I always thought the correct order was to state hot or cold (so the person knows what type of cup instead of giving the size then having to switch from grande hot to grande iced) then size (which cup)? Like if people thinking for 2 seconds while standing in line for 5 minutes this can be easier and faster for everybody? *facepalm*

When some dude says “4 ice cubes” but not that it’s meant to be iced 😐
Celiacgrl20 [OP]17 points3y ago
I’ll give him 4! And not a single cube more!

With brewed coffee or even lattes this makes sense, a tad annoying but not the same
Miturtleessuturtle7 points3y ago
I believe they mean when a customer orders, for example, a vanilla latte with 4 ice cubes when they actually wanted an *iced* vanilla latte with only 4 ice cubes, and then get mad when they receive a hot drink with steamed milk vs. an iced drink with cold milk and extra extra light ice.

Bingo.
That_Tuba_Who0 points3y ago
Ahhh okay that’s for the run down that one did slip past me
10enthDoctor3 points3y ago
No, it is what this photo is referring to. People have ordered a chai with 4 ice cubes, but didn’t specify hot or iced but wanted it iced. So it is the same.

What really gets me is when they ask for an americano with light ice and get upset when I ask if they want it hot with light ice or iced with light ice. Far too many ppl asking for hot with light ice for me to assume you want it iced, Karen

Bitch SEES me write on a hot cup. Doesn't say shit til the drink is made and handed off 🙄🙄🙄
