What's the deal with the Hub app?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by witchystump
I just got hired at a starbucks as a barista and was told to download the Hub app so I can then download 2 other apps to check my schedule and all. However, to download the Hub I had to give the app full permission of my phone--like it can reset my phone pin, delete all of my data, factory reset my phone, etc. It's more than a little concerning. This isn't a company phone, this is my phone, Starbucks has paid for nothing on it, and they can access any and everything on it and delete it if this app decides to. My phone has started acting up, Google deleted all of my previous browsers, I can't even open my Messages and had to delete my Outlook app for the same reason. I'm pretty sure it's the app causing this, and even if it isn't I'm beyond uncomfortable with starbucks having this kind of access on my personal phone. Can I delete the app and access my schedule online somewhere? Has anyone else been experiencing this kind of problem before?

This is why I never downloaded it lmao you can just go to sbux.co/teamworks

Oh thank god. It freaked me tf out to sign up for it. Can I change my schedule/request time off there too?

I have... No idea why the app needs that many permissions. That's why I pretended to download it during a work meeting but have only ever used my laptop.
Do any other workplaces have an app that's so intrusive?

Walmart.

I figure it is not for our phones, but corporate bought and owned phones. Why they're putting it on non-management and personal phones is what I don't get. I'm interested if any other companies do this too.

I work at a roller rink part time and we have a "crew app" but it's not intrusive like the sbux one at all.

I feel so dramatic saying this but it's all very Big Brother at this point. I feel a little nervous even having our groupchat app though iirc it didn't ask for near the amount of permissions Teamworks did. Just something strange about management/a company needing our attention 110% of the time.

I have the app and haven’t had any issues technical wise.

Starbucks doesn’t get any access to your personal phone. It can only “see” what you’ve downloaded from the app cafe and what you do when signed into teamworks; some companies allow you to clock in from your personal phone. Since it was a third party app it needed permissions, however they don’t actually have any way to get into your phone. If you read under the privacy app that gets downloaded it lists everything.

No, to download the Hub it directly has authorization to view, delete, and lock your phone. It may be different with different phone types but on mine it was listed as an Administrator app, meaning it did have permission to do all of this. Even after I deleted it, I got a notification from my phone that a third party had access to not only view but edit and change my phone if it desired and had to delete more off of my phone so SB didn't have access to it.
Also the list said all of this. It listed the ability to lock my phone, change my pin, delete my information and everything on it, lock my SD card, and about 20 more things. This is what the app does and why I was concerned. You might have a different version but this is what I had.

Do you have an iPhone or something else?
My understanding isn’t, the Starbucks hub app isn’t on any App Store, and is developed by 3rd party developers, so you need to have permissions on your phone to 1) download and 2) use a 3rd party app. I doubt it’s the HUB causing problems by itself.
There’s a link you can Google to access the schedule and time off/availability requests online, if you want to do that.

I have an Android and the other app for my schedule and all, thankfully. And I'm pretty sure it was the Hub; I hadn't done anything else to my phone or downloaded anything, and a few hours after I deleted it last night it started to work.

That’s so odd. I had no problems with it (iPhone here). Hope your phone works better now?

It’s just the default permissions that VMWare requires. Starbucks doesn’t get that access.
