Transition advice from Target Starbucks to real deal Starbucks (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by stephbarista
So...I might be moving to work at a “legitimate” Starbucks soon and I wanted to know if the transition will be difficult. Where I work now I have a coworker that transitioned from Barnes and Noble Cafe and it was hard for her to lose old habits. A quick example...we don’t care for the ice measurements and usually do light ice on everything...silly example but that’s one of many different things/procedures we do

Being open to retraining. Licensed stores typically do a god awful job of properly training baristas and following the correct procedures. Everything you know could be wrong, so don’t be someone that goes in assuming you know everything.

I'm learning at licensed store in an airport. Do corporate stores have a set system for training or is it all learn as you go?

As a store manager of the licensed store?

No, I'm learning as Barista.

Oh sorry wrong thread. At a corporate store it’s the same as licensed but all digital and you’d probably get practice shifts vs licensed is all in paper. It’s not supposed to be learn as you go but a lot of licensed stores suck and don’t do training

At the real deal starbucks we do tend to follow standard to a t. Just be open minded to your new barista trainer.

I have a coworker from a Safeway store, and the transition seemed pretty easy for her. There are many differences, but making the drinks is mostly the same, so that is helpful!
I agree, be open to what your trainer has to say!

The standards, routines, and recipes are the same for nearly everything you do. You'll notice that some prices are different, and some of the food and retail offerings will be different.

The biggest thing is that many licensed stores aren't given lots of oversight, and may only get a monthly or quarterly visit from corporate to check in to make sure they're meeting standards. Which is why many licensed stores develop bad habits.

The best advice is to ask lots of questions. Make sure you get a clear understanding of standards and expectations.
