I used to get upset about this until my manager explained that in a few months sbux will adjust the prices of drinks to reflect how much product gets used. So in reality, the attempt to save a few cents will end up costing them more in the long run.
My team does take joy in ringing out waters with 10 pumps of syrup as custom iced teas tho.
The_9_month_lurker32 points3y ago
I’ve only had one person order that 10 pump raspberry water drink and her mom was paying. Didn’t understand why they’d spend 3.25 on it but I didn’t argue.
[deleted]2 points3y ago
I have a friend that used to be a shift and I was telling her about how I rung it up as a custom and she was like “but there’s no tea so it still should have been 60¢” and argued with me about it. Yet my current shifts and SM told me I did it right? I’m a lightly roasted green bean, so I’m still learning the correct ways to ring certain things up.
voxinx5 points3y ago
Starbucks Corp has said that a modified water is not on the menu, and we can only serve things based on the menu.
nightshadecorvii11 points3y ago
One of my more seasoned shifts of nine years let these two young girls get away with it and I was fine until they ordered four ventis with 10 pumps each just for the two of them. It wasn’t the money, it was giving these two kids that much fucking sugar
AliCandyBar11 points3y ago
I thought you couldn't use water as a base for a drink?
AdorablePrawn34 points3y ago
Yeah that’s why you ring them up as custom iced teas
knitandcurls1 points3y ago
I just ring it in however they say it. It doesn’t come out of my pocket if they get a deal.
TinyItalian88 points3y ago
Ohhh I hate when they get a refresher/tea with no ice, but then ask for a larger cup filled with ice. YOU AIN’T SLY I SEE WHAT U DOIN
Tangofett445 points3y ago
The socialist in me is totally fine with people rocking the system to save a buck. Been there sister, been there... Edit: spelling
gaayrat38 points3y ago
My coworker gets so worked up over people scamming the system and I’m like....why? It’s not going to benefit you at all
AndheraFarishta3 points3y ago
Most of my coworkers who had a problem with this were like the ones who felt like personally attacked and like their ego was being insulted when it's like nah sis/bro/fam like it's not that big of a deal it's our managers problem not ours lol.
Saoirse_Says20 points3y ago
Yeah honestly I love giving people extra shit
Tangofett426 points3y ago
When people order dirty chais with a normal latte's amount of shots, I suggest they order it as a latte add chai. Saved them 1.30 ish I think
thenarwhalsbarista15 points3y ago
I have a guy come in just about every day for a grande vanilla chai with two add shots and the difference in price is large! I love doing that and it makes him smile 😁
Dantesdeception6 points3y ago
I would love to do this but if our average ticket prices don't hit 5$ we can get written up at our store
AcademicArtist973 points3y ago
I will only do that for people who are super nice, and just overall a decent person.
clairedixon1 points3y ago
AHH I can’t believe I never realized this!!!
LilKaySigs7 points3y ago
Nothing wrong with fucking the system. It’s only that there’s no standard for no ice so you’re not sure if it’s gonna be too watery or too juicy
Tangofett411 points3y ago
If you just skip to the next measurements, it's usually about the same. Take the juice to the water line, take the water to the ice line. Bam boom room temp SAR
TableForOnePlz13 points3y ago
I always ask for light ice becomes ~sometimes~ they put SO MUCH ice. Take a good sip and the venti is almost gone.
Tangofett49 points3y ago
Valid criticism
AndheraFarishta5 points3y ago
THIS IS LITERALLY WHY I GET LIGHT ICE
and cause I'm like p. thirsty all the time ayyyy.
Gingersnap53221 points3y ago
Lately I’ve taught them they can order a tall in a venti and they’ve been cool with it
Thankyousoymuch29 points3y ago
You’re right! About five years ago people started getting matcha waters for 80 cents until corporate saw the trend and had us start using the custom iced tea button so that they were charged properly. Any time a customer wants to use water as a base for their drink, you ring it in as a custom iced tea. That’s how it’s been done at every store I’ve worked at.
AcademicArtist975 points3y ago
I don't know if people know about that at my store. Cause the only time I heard about it was from Starbucks barista forums.
cactuskirby14 points3y ago
I promise you all this company does not care about us and will never care about us enough to care about how a costumer tries to save a dumb .50 cents 🤷🏽♀️

But what about people, like myself, who don’t get the ice on the side? I’m a barista and I would never deny an order like that, no matter what their intentions are because we don’t know it. Maybe other people like me hate ice in drinks because it waters it down and makes things too cold to drink immediately.
I remember one time someone got two drinks without ice and said it was because they were going on a road trip and didn’t want it to get watery so they’d get ice at different stops along the way.
burberrybradshaw14 points3y ago
That’s what I do. We have a good Starbucks 40 miles away and I get my boyfriend an iced no ice white mocha so I can bring it home to him without it getting gross. Some baristas are so petty lol. Unless it’s affecting your paycheck who cares.

romanianhopscotch10 points3y ago
I always wondered about that! Cause like.. If people get light ice I’ll happily give them more drink, but no ice just seems like cheating the system.
cs_phoenix7 points3y ago
Licensed I assume?

cs_phoenix2 points3y ago
Oh that’s interesting!
AcademicArtist971 points3y ago
See I know we are no longer allowed to do Trenta with no ice, and we still have people try to get that all the time.
brunette4277 points3y ago
Personally I don't like ice or the ice watering everything down. I'd probably end up just getting light ice but not everyone likes ice.
rosallia3 points3y ago
I work in a very privileged neighborhood. They got *money* yall.
But they want to steal sugar containers so then we started using packets.
Manager gave people a 5 gallon Cambro out of being nice, they come back *demanding* it be refilled.
This lady ordered two iced venti matcha lattes with no ice, she says " I ordered these all the time and these never come with foam, I want what I paid for! "
She wanted it remade, I said that I could just add more milk if it is okay with her (was not the case) I calmly explained it can be shaken or it can have clumps of matcha floating around because without it being shaken the matcha wont dissolve. This woman comes all the time, orders the same thing and just gives all of us a hard time. She knows what to expect. I literally do not care giving more product, *except* when it comes down to morallity and people being extremely rude and taking advantage of others.
I could go on with stories. Keep in mind, all of these people can pay. They 100% can afford it, specifically in my neighborhood.
crzyshiba2 points3y ago
Haha it’s like me I sometimes order a trenta white peach tea no water haha take it and save it haha
sweetinasense1 points3y ago
Erry time.
alimcc02201 points3y ago
Or the people that order 3 shots of espresso with white mocha in a venti cup I put the espresso in then ice and pack the ice in there so they get and inch for milk at best
BuffyBoltonVampFlayr2 points3y ago
why tho

Yea honestly I don’t understand why we all get into this capitalist mindset while working. Why tf am I trying to save this company money. When they get an extra cup of ice that just annoys me cuz they’re wasting plastic but why tf should I care if they get a drink with no ice ? I used to have this mindset but if people are “tricking” the system and as long as it doesn’t make things complicated for me i don’t get upset.

“The less money a company makes the less they’re workers are likely to be paid” I promise we’ll get paid shit either way lol working hard has nothing to do with being a shill for capitalism
Alohomora4209 points3y ago
I work in one of the busiest stores in my district and we always get treated like shit. We’re overworked, underpaid, store is rundown and we’re always out of something. Starbucks doesn’t give a fuck about us why should I care about saving them a few cents that makes no difference compared to the amount they make.
