I called out today because I’ve been coughing all night long and my sinuses are so congested, I can’t even hear cause everything is muffled and I keep coughing up phlegm. Why do your coworkers make you feel bad for not being okay to come to work??? Do you want me to cough on every singe thing I touch? I can’t freaking help it. I was coughing and sneezing all day yesterday and they put me on oven. I just feel uncomfortable touching peoples food or drinks when I can’t control/contain my cough

Don’t let it get to you. There’s this horrible culture of not calling out sick unless you’re basically dying and it’s really stupid. Yes it can cause more stress for those working but ultimately it’s for the best. You need to rest & get better

Especially in food service! I would rather not miss work because I need the money but I would also rather miss work instead of getting every person I come into contact with sick ahha

It’s like being gaslighted. Corporate says don’t come in sick but then there’s this subtle disapproval if you don’t go in sick. But you have to do what’s best for your, your coworkers’, and the customers’ best health interest. Personally, it irritates me if someone comes in sick. For people like me whose immunity is compromised, they’re putting others at risk. Best to stay home.

Thank you, yes! My shift (who I’ve been known pretty much majority of my life) texted me when I called out and told me she’s been sick and she’s on meds and she still goes to work. Like ok, you shouldn’t be going if you’re that sick though, that’s your choice to jeopardize other people’s health

I know. 6 years I have only called off three times. 2 for being in the hospital and 1 for when my dad had a quadruple by pass surgery. I have gone into work with no voice and hella sick and honestly they kept me there. It shocks me. But I went in fear of people being so mad. It’s ridiculous. I was a shift and that’s why I felt like I HAD to come in, because then other people had to stay. I demoted and I refuse to ever, EVER put this company before my own health and family. Remember no matter what, it will be okay. The store is still there. And they aren’t mad you are sick they just are down coverage. You did the right thing.

Its extremely difficult as a shift though. Like i dont want the other shift to work a 16 hour day. We have a shift group chat and we help each other out when we can, but it is a feeling of calling out not being an option at times

Same. It just sucks. I did it for 5 years. Double after double and having to stay. I got another job that is triple what I make at Starbucks so I put that job first now and I demoted and I honestly make 10 cents less now as a barista...... I had to argue my pay but it worked and now all that stress is gone.

I honestly believe that a starbucks shift supervisor is one of the most underpaid jobs out there. The stress, expectations, and skills do not come anywhere close to the pay

I 100 percent agree. People don’t understand that we are responsible for everything and cleaning and every little thing. We have to treat the store likes it’s another house. We don’t have a cleaning crew come. We aren’t pressing a button for the drinks to be made. I love my co workers. LOVE THEM. Always have every few months I love them. It’s always changing. But the stress as a shift was beyond more responsibility than I need, any one needs.

I totally feel you. I just got over being sick, I had no voice, couldn’t breathe well, I was coughing, sneezing, throwing up, fever, fatigued, and everything just hurt.
I called out one day and ended up going to work with no voice, totally exhausted because I felt bad enough for calling out the day before.
I felt like I couldn’t get better and it’s because I was working so much and not letting my body rest.
My coworkers were so rude to me the day after I called out and were super dry and snobby. Even though I could barely talk, I was still coughing and dead tired
I didn’t want to contaminate anything so I asked to stay on customer support and wash dishes, basically just do background work and it started off that way, but I ended up being on warming for two hours and I just felt sick to my stomach knowing I could be contaminating someone’s food.. I asked to move because I felt like it was dangerous to be there and my shift said it was no big deal.
It’s ridiculous what we have to go through for something as necessary as our HEALTH, especially in a place where we serve food and drink and have soooo many opportunities to contaminate something a customer consumes.
Why is it more acceptable to come to work contagiously sick just to do an awful job and feel miserable, than it is to call out and try to heal so that you can perform your best for the following days? It seems like as long as you show up you’re off the hook, even if you’re getting other partners/customers sick and hurting yourself too along the way.
I wish that we had enough people scheduled to survive one person calling out. Sigh...

The same!! I feel worse now than I did this morning when I called out. I don’t wanna be the reason everyone has bad days but :(((( I seriously can’t help it and idk what to do...

I’d say your best bet is asking around and seeing if someone will take your shift, that’s what I do and it usually makes me feel better than just leaving it all to my SM, but honestly it is their job to find coverage, not yours. Another thing I’ve noticed is people coming in and getting sent home makes them feel a little better than just calling out. I hope you feel better though. Best of luck !
littleolefee [OP]1 points3y ago
Yeah, true. I feel worse today than before and I’ve usually never had colds that lasted longer than a couple days and I’ve been taking medicine so I thought I’d feel a little better today. But I actually feel worse. When I called to tell them, they’re just really rude and I understand because “they will be short a person” and “if I knew I was gonna be sick I should’ve said something yesterday” like how do I predict tomorrow I’m going to be sick? :|
bbun2232 points3y ago
I know I only get mad/make comments when the person calling in is someone who habitually phones in. It’s terrible to be sick and no one should have to work sick. But if sally is calling in sick when she already called in twice last week and was late yesterday well.... I kinda hate you
Byzelo2 points3y ago
I don’t think people are necessarily mad at YOU, but more so that they’re frustrated being down one person for the shift. Don’t feel bad, I think the mentality of “calling off sick is lazy” is dying off. Slowly, but it’s getting there.
I hope you feel better! Drink lots of water and rest
