Tips (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hey guys! I don’t work at a Starbucks but another local coffee shop. I can relate to some of the things here so I love reading everyone’s post.

The coffee shop I work at is looking for another way to split tips and I’ve read something on here about tip Tuesday? Do all of the tips from the week get pooled and split between everyone? Does it depend on how many hours someone worked?

We are all coming up with ideas on a better method to manage tips and I’m assuming the method that Starbucks uses must be pretty good! Thanks!!

Yep, all pooled, added up and divided by total number of hours worked by the whole store and then multiplied by each individual persons hours.

Do you and your coworkers seem to like that? And on tuesdays is it handed out as cash or a check?

The way we do it makes sense. Some people want to have it divided by time of day, or given to whoever's on reg (because it's like they're earning tips) but any other way you split it is going to be unfair to someone. Those that are on bar all day won't make anything, or closers (when we generally have less customers and therefore less tips) would get less than the openers, even though they are doing the same amount of work.

The only thing is holidays. Generally for holidays the tips are only divided among those that worked that day, as opposed to being pooled with the rest of the weeks tips

Edit: the cash is put in a paper bag that is left in the safe for whenever people can pick them up. Cash is easier because it's what people use to tip anyway. We just change out the coins for bills with the change we have on hand for the store

That’s the issue we’re having at my store, closers get barely any in tips while the openers get a decent amount. Plus closers feel like they’re having to do more work (which is true to some extent). I know Starbucks doesn’t have credit card tips, but my store does so I think I’m going to offer that we pool credit card tips and people who are working keep any cash tips they get (which is at most $5) or something like that. But yeah you’re right, the way Starbucks does it makes a lot of sense.

There actually are credit card tips from the app! At the end of the day we just pull the tip amount from that day from the cash drawer and add those to the rest of the cash tips to be distributed on Tuesday.

The only complaint I've heard from partners at starbucks is that the brand new employee who's fumbling around and messing up orders gets the same tips as the experienced barista who's responsible for brining in lots of those tips.

I think it's also important to have a store culture where people who work different day parts understand and appreciate what other shifts do. I don't tolerate any AM vs PM complaining.

Plus since tips are doled out in cash you don't have to claim it. (At least in Canada)

Important reminder that US partners do have to declare their tips.

Tips are pooled for the week monday-sunday. And then any non-management has an equal share of tips based on the number of hours worked. Quick example with numbers to make the math easy: store takes in $1000 in tips for the week. There are 500 hours of labor for the week, so the tip rate is $2/hour. So if Joe works for 10 hours that week he gets $20 in tips.

I rationalize this method by understanding that everyone has an equally important role to play in the store. The barista who works peak may be making more drinks and at a faster rate than the night crew, but night crew does lots of the cleaning and prep to set the morning crew up for peak. It's also a very simple to understand method for doing tips that only takes a 4th grade level of math to understand and check.

The only exception to this is tips on Xmas. Those are only for partners who worked that day.

Yes its divided equally depending on how many hours you worked. So if there were 300 hours worked, and $900 worth of tips, every person would get $3 in cash foe every hour they worked and its all divided and picked up Tuesday
callowaysk [OP] 2 points 3y ago
That sounds like a really good system to me, but would require more work on my boss’ part, so I’ll see what he says haha

The dividing of tips is something we do on Tuesday mornings and usually takes about an hour or an hour and a half. Depending on your stores system and size that could vary though. Im mainly an opener at starbucks and even though i serve wayy more customers than the closers, they work just as hard and have their own work in tasks and whatnot. Its a good system if y'all can afford to set time aside for someone to do it

Im really going to try and promote this idea to my boss because it sounds better and better. I’m hoping the extra time won’t be a con but I could just say it could be something he does when he does payroll weekly

Your questions already been answered, however I also suggest keeping your tips somewhere safe until you’re ready to pool them
