Anyone else get offended by stupid questions about drinks? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lilmorphinannie
Like, I’ve had a few customers ask if I know how to make a caramel macchiato🙄 oh, and this one lady asked if I knew what Classic Syrup was. I didn’t mean to sound so snotty in my “yes” reply but she ended up walking away in a huff. I mean, yeah I might not know all the “secret menu” items but c’mon. I literally work at Starbucks. I kind of HAVE to know how to make the drinks. Questions like that just get under my skin. Anyone else??

It doesn't really bother me when they ask, because some customers are just curious. What really bothers me is when they try to correct me. And I'm like... I do this for a living, EVERYDAY. Stop trying to correct me if you don't know the first thing about it.

I think it all depends on their tone, too. This lady asked about the classic like a parent asking a five year old how many fingers they were holding up. Like, I’m 33 lady. Please do not talk to me like a child.

Last night i got asked for Jade Citrus Mint brewed tea, with no jade Citrus and mint majesty instead. I spent 5 minutes trying to explain it to the couple that its one or the other. They went looking to hear out any rational thought and just called me stupid and left. 🤷‍♂️

Bahahahaha omg I love this. I would have shown them both bags and have them point to the one they wanted. People are so entertaining and they don’t even know it lol

Could it possibly have been a Honey Citrus Mint Tea with Mint Majesty instead of Jade Citrus Mint?

I get customers asking for that sometimes?

Apparently it tastes better with Mint Majesty 🤷🏻‍♀️

People really don’t know what they’re ordering, it’s frustrating. People really be like that sometimes.
GoldTurds- 3 points 3y ago
That was part of my explanation too 😂 they weren't having any of anything lol

Love that for you 😂

Douchey white dudes who get cortados always ask me if I know how to make it and then explain it to me after I reply that I do
SelocAvrap 3 points 3y ago
I never learned how to make a cortado, but I'm probably in the wrong country. When I looked it up, it just looked like a short flat white. If you don't mind me asking, what's the difference?
pupperoni-pizzas 2 points 3y ago
It’s just an equal amount of espresso and steamed milk
SelocAvrap 2 points 3y ago
Whole milk & ristretto? Or does it not matter?
pupperoni-pizzas 1 points 3y ago
I’ve never had someone mansplain it that deeply. I’m sure if it was any more complicated they’d explain it about 3 times to make sure my female pea brain can handle it. So, 2% and regular shots are fine.

I was asked if the eggnog has eggs in it, I explained that yes it does, but it’s pasteurized and therefore it’s safe, she then goes on to tell me that we told her we put eggs in the cloud macchiatos, I was like ummm no it’s egg whites in powder form to make like a meringue, she was like oh no you crack an egg in the cup, we all just stared at each other like huh? Then she asked me how the pasteurize the milk and I was like idk I’ve never made milk before. She was so insistent that we had eggs in the back for drinks.
lilmorphinannie [OP] 3 points 3y ago
I love it when that happens. Especially when they add the “oh, I’ve seen them do that before/they just did it for me last week.” Like, nah bish. I work here 40 hours a week and I’ve never seen you before. What are they trying to gain by lying?!? Cracks me up.

I had a customer tell me when to stop and go while making a pour-over. Over. And over. He outright said "if you add to much water, the coffee won't be as strong." Like. Buddy. The reason we do the way we do is to make it good, and if you keep telling me to put more water in instead of letting me pour slowly in circles in and out, it won't be right. If you keep telling me to stop, then go faster, then jump up and down and pat my head, the pour-over fairy isn't going to instantly make it just the way you want. Let me make it according to standard

Idk if it’s mainly bc i’m licensed but people always ask if I know how to make the starbucks double shot on ice and even when I say yes they watch me make it to be sure i’m doing it right
tired-barista 3 points 3y ago
nah it's not just licensed stores. we get it at corporate stores too. my favorite is when someone stares at you while making an undertow after telling them you know how do make it and analyze every step. like yes sir, i do in fact need pour the shot over the spoon so it doesn't mix - no, pouring it slowly does not have the same effect. i get less hell for double shots
Spoopyamlaine 1 points 3y ago
lmao no one has ever ordered an undertow from me but I learned how just to be ready to shove it in someone’s face when they do finally order one and assume I can’t
bubb1eb4th 1 points 3y ago
that happens to me all the time when customers order cappuccinos. because we work at starbucks people assume we don't know how to make hot drinks or anything fancier than an amerciano. so annoying
ihateyousoymatcha -2 points 3y ago
It's possible they don't know if the drink is common enough you remember the recipe. Asking if you know what classic syrup is might be another way to ask if we have it.

Of course it depends entirely on the tone they use, but there is always another point of view. ❤️
lilmorphinannie [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Yes, tone definitely matters. I just wish if people want to know IF we have something, they just SAY it. Don’t dance around it!
