Quest regarding attendance (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by nightkat89
So the other day I was home sick from work as I went to urgent care and found out I had bronchitis. I was excused for two days according to my paperwork. I did the proper thing and started searching for a replacement for my 3-12am shift right away.

Came in following my sickness and my SM is trying to give me heat over it. I don’t know if I did something wrong or if there was anything I could do to help the situation more.

Any tips/advice? Thanks!

Call the partner help line. You were sick. It’s not your fault

If you have diagnoses bronchitis then I would probably put you on a short term medical leave of absence until you got a doctors note to say it has cleared up. If you have bronchitis I don't want you in the store coughing all the time and potentially getting partners and customers sick. If you have a sudden onset illness (unexpected vomiting, sore throat, or other symptoms that interfere with working, or restrict you from handling food) then that's not your responsibility to find coverage but you still have to notify the store so that they can find coverage.

If your SM is hassling you over this then you need to contact your DM or PRSC to tell them the correct procedure for what to do when someone calls out sick, especially if they have a doctors note like you did.

I was permitted to return to work in a couple of days. The doctor mentioned to me that’s around the time it takes the antibiotics and steroids to start taking full effect. I won’t be perfect, but I will be functional.

I’m just kind of bummed I got this heat when I was already not feeling well and trying to recoup.

I would remind your SM that one of this years goals is to make every partner be able to say they would recommend working in their store, and the way you were treated for legitimately calling out sick hurts that cause.

Theres honestly alot that could be going on w this. I have alot of questions lol. Did u get the shift covered? Did u have any more shifts? If not, do u have any sick hours u could have used? Also, if youre sick, especially with something serious, your health is far more important than sbx. If you called out, which im assuming u did, its the shift and managers responsibility to find coverage for your shift. You trying to find coverage honestly was an extra step u didnt need to do, but shows good on your part. But if your manager isnt as forgiving.... it probably doesnt matter. Bottom line; if it can blow over, and you dont think it wont be a huge deal in the future when it comes to calling out, let it go. If not, make sure u document everything now, just in case u need it later. And call the help line. U have paperwork. U tried to find coverage. Youre sick. Honestly idk how much i helped but i hope u feel better my dude

See that’s not the speech they have been giving us In our district. They tell us it’s our duty to get shifts covered, which I always found a little weird. Helping out and just being a good partner makes sense, but if I try and people obviously don’t want it, I’ve literally done everything I can do,

I did call out for this situation. There was no coverage after calling 5 other stores in the district and bribing people with dinner, I do have paperwork from the doctor mentioning I shouldn’t be at work with bronchitis (who would of thought?!)

I don’t know, just seems like theyre having a bad time because our store is actively having attendance issues to begin with and I’m getting piled in there with it.

There is an actual attendance policy. You are responsible for finding your own coverage after the first day. As a shift supervisor, I am only responsible for getting a partners shift covered for one day. If they miss more days after that, it’s up to them or they can be written up.
