Another post about labor cuts (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by pebbles4eva
My boss hadn’t told me about the labor cuts until last night. Didn’t really affect my hours because I’m an SSV. But i think last week specifically the weekend was my breaking point. I was in the process of telling him I’m burned out, tired of the stressful shifts and that I am considering changing my availability to not work weekends. Later in the conversation, he tells me about the labor cuts and I just woke up this morning and realized this is why it’s been a horrible couple weeks. So now I’m burned out and kinda dread going in every day. Hopefully when it’s all over I don’t still feel this way.

Thank you for listening to my rant

I had a very similar conversation with my manger recently and it’s the same thing. I’m so tired of being understaffed I’m tired of feeling like I’m drowning all the time. They keep asking us to do more but keep giving us less and I’m soo over it

Yeah exactly! And then I feel guilty for always having something negative to say to the boss. Just can’t win right now

I need more out of you, and I'm also taking more from you. I'm sure you haven't had a break in a couple weeks (me).

So unacceptable given the sheer valuation and income of Starbucks as a company. Each store is rarely in danger of going under, there is always a line everywhere!

It’s another example of corporate profits being valued higher than employee wellbeing.

We gotta get paid

See my manager didn’t tell any of us, the whole store learnt about it from other workers from other stores. And since I’m one of three ssv in my store we are all heading heavily into a wicked burn out. Also as the only weekend ssv I can say that I under stand the labour cuts but we really need another ssv and barista for weekends because having only two people from 2-7:30 is hell when you have to run multiple breaks

I close Friday and open/close on both Saturday and Sunday. We had 3 call outs on Friday and Saturday and 5 on Sunday. We aren’t really being affected by labor cuts since no one ever comes in anyway, but I’m rapidly getting burnt out

Hey.. I’m an SSV who is feeling supper burnt out and just learned about the labor cuts right now. The reason Ive had to fight my SM to give me 3 baristas for happy hour. But I get yelled at when I only get 2 and it’s a train wreck.

I was scheduled less than 30 hours. I clocked out yesterday with 46. We had about 20 call outs for the week. My SM had to call our DM to get my ot approved. Apparently a few stores have been getting way too much overtime and people are getting written up.

I’m a full time employee and was offered 32 extra hours in overtime. Thinking labor costs I only agreed to come in for half shifts. Our store is experiencing so many call outs leading to insane amounts of overtime.
xiew 3 points 3y ago
God I wish. I’d kill for that overtime rn.
sandycat555 2 points 3y ago
Yeah the call outs have been hitting us hard. When you reduce hours, you really need everyone scheduled to show up.

Is this a regional thing? My store has steadily added hours and even 2 people since the summer. Thanksgiving week my SM was off and told me "if you feel like you REALLY need to cut labor, but only if you want". We even added an extra person to our friday morning play.
bbun223 5 points 3y ago
Same! We were always getting scheduled short and then after many complaints we now have up to 7 partners in on a weekend afternoon. I guess we make enough $ and have the numbers to afford that many partners but I can’t help but feel bitter for the 8 months I’ve worked with only 4 partners scheduled the entire day when we have to run breaks. Now my boss always tells me I can call in a partner if I feel like we need the extra help. Weird.

Anyone else think it’s funny that they were promising extra labor and mental health awareness at the leadership summit? Now it’s the busy holiday season and they are slashing labor and burning out their partners? I’d say constantly running a short staffed floor and not having enough hours to be able to afford gifts or travel going into the holidays are pretty detrimental to mental health.

Exactly! And the update is my hours just got cut too!

Yeah my store in Maryland just went through labor cuts for about two months and they were the most stressful and dreadful months I’ve ever worked for the company. Lucky it just started to pick up so stay strong and hopefully they would be over soon!
crzyshiba 4 points 3y ago
Well I’m dreading happy hour we’re understaffed so those days are hell, I’m scared to work this Thursday haha since I now it will be short staffed then I’m only a few months in and with only getting 2 days a week 4 hour shifts let’s just say my Frappuccino skills are pretty bad .
pebbles4eva [OP] 4 points 3y ago
Well happy hours usually kinda suck whether you know how to make frappuccinos or not 😂
crzyshiba 4 points 3y ago
Hahaha so true Hahahah
xiew 3 points 3y ago
I still don’t get these labor cuts. I’m a slow ish lobby store and we did 3800 on Saturday (kinda busy) and then only like 2700 on Sunday. We had 9 people on the floor on Saturday and like 7 on Sunday. We literally were standing around with no one in line.
jackissosick 1 points 3y ago
Those are my stores numbers and we have 4 people during peak and most of the day we have 2 or 3

They aren't going to meet their fiscal goals for this year - they are millions from it. Once its all over and done with than it should return to normal once the next fiscal year starts. Or that's what I'm understanding from my manager.
Jeffuk88 1 points 3y ago
Starbucks fiscal year is October to September so We just started a new one
