Advice for a clumsy barista (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by baz1lli0n
I’m relatively new to Starbucks (2 months) but spend a lot of time on bar at my store. As this is my first coffee job, I am still new and make mistakes, and have a bad habit of cutting or burning my hands frequently (not on bar necessarily, just on the job). My question is, how do I take care of my hands while still being on bar? Having nothing on the cuts seems unsanitary and I want to avoid infection, plus it looks gross from a customer view (seeing someone handle their drink with open wounds). However, bandaids are a pain in the butt and fall of within 4 drinks (plus having a dirty bandaid while making a drink seems kind of gross from a customer’s perspective too). I am incredibly hygienic and wash my hands often, but customers don’t always realize that and I don’t want to make any customers uncomfortable. Does anyone have any tips on taking care of minor cuts on bar or should I just avoid bar altogether?

We are not allowed to be working with any open cuts. Band-Aids can be worn but a glove has to be worn over it.

Take a pair of scissors and continually play with them, toss them behind your back over the shoulder, flip them in your hands, even ask partners to throw them to you. Over time you will learn to catch the scissors, and to avoid cutting yourself because you’ll mess up and be in frequent pain from handling them wrong. Eventually you will have mastered the scissors. Now move on to a food cutting knife. Only when you have mastered this, will you have learned how to excel in your coveted position as a peak bar partner; this is the Starbucks way.

I’m on bar for peak every shift. My hands start splitting open by my knuckles and the webby part in between my fingers from the sanitizer, I get cuts from the sticker machines, and burns all the time. What’s really been helping me is Aquaphor!!! I just lather it on when I’m at home and even bring it to work to spot treat while I’m working, you can’t see it but it’s thick enough to help with the stinging and really promotes healing

Finger condoms my dude. Or I cut one finger of a glove off and tape it so the bandaid is covered and waterproof.

I just wash my hands often, and deal with cardboard burns and small scrapes being dipped in sanitizer and soap and water. If the minor injuries aren’t actively dripping fluid, I just let them breathe.
