Lowering my hour availability and it makes me feel like I’m doing something wrong. Needing reassurance.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SmoothEvidence
I started Starbucks in August and really like it but I run my own business, so being a barista is the side hustle for me. I’m dropping my hours down to 12-15 hours a week after the new year and I feel sheepish about it. I keep beating myself up with thoughts like “I’m probably the only part-time partner in the world that works under 20 hours” and “my SM probably thinks I’m a such a slacker”.
FWIW I frequently cover shifts for other people, I’m always looking for ways to be helpful while on my shift, and I often offer to stay on after my shift is supposed to be over so I can continue training on bar, etc. So I know I’m a good partner at my store but I can’t shake this feeling like I’m doing something wrong by lowering my availability.
I guess I’m wanting someone to tell me it’s okay to work those few hours and that I’m not a horrible person 🥴

Ok I have been with SB for just about 3 years. I started over summer and was working full time, went to part time during my college semesters and picked up shifts where I could to help out. There was a time for about 6-7 months I ONLY worked a closing shift on Tuesday’s. It was nuts and I don’t know how I wasn’t fired but the company tries to understand and work with you as much as possible. I went from working Tuesday’s only back to part time and now I’m a Shift. Trust me, they care 10000% more about quality of work than quantity. If you’re working hard and connecting with customers while you can be there, they will appreciate you :)

I’ve been working for Starbucks since I started college. It’s been 6 years now and I’ve ranged from part time to picking up every shift I can and if OT is approved? I’m there! Since I’ve graduated college, and I’m employed in my career, I work one day a week. Anywhere from 4-8 hours a week. On top of that I just took most of December off for medical reasons. You should not feel bad for prioritizing. It’s a part of a healthy life. Also you aren’t alone in being part time at all!

I average about 13! No shame in adequately balancing your home and starb life. Just think, its better to lower your hours now than leaving your partners understaffed if you get too busy and call in later.

We have a few partners that work 8-10 hours a week, having a business is hard and most people will understand that sbucks is just your side hustle!

Just dropped my availability down due to school and have no regrets! You have to do what’s right for you and your health.
