Why can't we write on tip jars? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Beverice
Title. Seriously, corporate just hates us. No tipping with cards - Can't write the word "Tips" on a tip jar. The amount of times I get asked "do you have a tip jar" on a daily basis is absurd.

That and taking our hours away is making me consider joining a small coffee shop. Pretty sure they make a massive amount of tips, considering they all use a PoS system that allows credit card tipping.

What?? I had no idea this was a thing? I swear our dt tip jar says "tips" on it? I'll have to check the next day I work and get back to you...

And as far as small independent/local coffee shops go, yes, you make a shit ton more money in tips.

I'm on my 3rd month of being a sbux partner after spending 10 years working in small, local shops and let me just say... I fucking *cringe* when I see the amount of my weekly tips. No matter which of the shops it was that I was working in, or which shift I was on, I would take home a MINIMUM of $30 cash tips *every. single. day.** in the local spots. And those were the slow days! There were many often times I was taking home $60 - $75/day, so as bad as this may sound, I hardly even look forward to receiving my weeklies now. And I actually die a little inside whenever my lead who counts them tells me "dang girl, you must've had a good week cause you got FAT tips!", and I look at the total only to find they're basically as much as I'd make in a day at an independent spot...

So, not giving our customers the option to tip on debit/credit is some wet hot bullshit. Especially given the fact that the cost of changing the system to allow it would not only benefit the partners (ya know, the people who actually *make* this world-wide fuckin conglomerate worth literal BILLIONS), but it would dramatically benefit the company as a whole as well, being that there would be more of an incentive for us to go even *more* above and beyond with cUsToMeR cOnNeCtIoNs and MaKiNg ThE MoMeNt RiGhT and blah blal blah 😒

Apparently, the writing on tip jar thing is a midwestern policy. :^) Makes complete sense

We write cute sayings like “thanks soy matcha” or “thanks a latte” and have 2 up front that are basically which would you rather (like pumpkin pie or apple pie.” That usually makes it pretty clear it’s a tip jar.
Our mobile order station jar used to say tips so I’m not sure that we aren’t allowed to write tips on them. Doesn’t mean it’s not true, I’ve just never heard that.

We are not. I remember pulling up the action item years ago stating that there was no writing allowed on til jars. It may have changed since then but I know for a fact we weren’t allowed to do it at one point. I wanted to do a would you rather thing too and got shot down and shown the rule.

I left Starbucks after three years for a small mom and pop coffee shop with only 4 employees. I never regretted it, so much more chill and with tips, I make 15$ an hour. Highly recommend 👍🏻

Every store I’ve worked out definitely had a jar that says tips lmao

A lot of people don’t even realize we have one.

Every store in my city has written something on their tip jar. Never heard of this policy before, and haven't been able to find any documentation on it.
