I’ve never felt so fucking useless in my life.(self.starbucksbaristas)

I’ve worked here almost a month and I still feel like I know nothing. I’m always in the way, I always have to ask 500 questions during my shift and it seems like I’m really starting to wear on the other partners. Happy hours are especially bad because there isn’t time to learn anything. It’s just sink or swim and I’m floating like a lead balloon weighted down with barbells.

You know what. A lot of people feel this way. 6 years ago ( when recipes were a thousand times easier) I felt this exact way. I can’t imagine being thrown in now. I had a manager who was frustrated with me and honestly the partners at the time begged her to send me home. I remember just lidding drinks and handing them off for my whole shift one time because partners felt so strongly that I shouldn’t be there. It just took one partner ( can’t even remember his name) to explain things to me. Are you cool with your trainer? Maybe your manager is nicer than mine was at the time ( she was an outside hire manager and wasn’t my manager for long) go to them for help and ask for advice. We on Reddit are here to support you as well. You are NOT DUMB. I’m sorry you feel that you are in the way. This job is harder than people think. You got this!!!!

When I interviewed for this job, the manager told me that I wouldn't really feel comfortable until the four month mark. And honestly that was super true. You shouldn't expect to know everything this soon and neither should any of the partners at your store. It would be shocking if your partners are actually annoyed at you; it's almost certainly just you being nervous.
I also worked a lot of peak shifts when I started and I learned the most when I would do a mid shift, even when I wasn't on bar. Depending on your schedule, talking to your sm about some off-peak shifts where you can learn more might be beneficial. But honestly, you're fine. The fact that you're concerned enough to ask is already a good sign.

A month is nothing. I'm at 6 months and finally feel pretty confident with most of it. Insist on bar time when it's not peak and double-check the recipe on the register when you need to. It's really a numbers game - practice, practice, practice. Hang in there - you will master it all.

It’s always peak is the problem. There’s never not 7-10 drinks in the drive through and the cafe. At least not when I’ve been on. Or the opposite, it’s so slow nothing is going on.

When it's dead make practice drinks. I promise it gets easier.

Same! I left a career of 20 years to train for management and I quit after 4 weeks when I was told I wasn't catching on fast enough. I had 20 plus years of management experience. I have never felt so humiliated and ignorant in my life. Its unfortunate because I really wanted the job.

Your partners shouldn't be making you feel as if you're in the way or incompetent - we were all new at one point so if they're treating you like that that just means they're big fat assholes. But I agree with another commenter that it's much more likely a case of you being hard on yourself. You may feel like your partner's bad attitudes are geared towards you, but I'd bet it's really just them being overwhelmed and burnt out with the job in general rather than having much of anything to do with you personally.
So give yourself a break! No one expects you to have it locked down by your first month. Or second. Or third! But what *is* expected of you, is to have faith in *yourself*, cause things will just snowball and spiral when you're being hard on yourself. It'll all be much easier (and dare I say - even FUN!) when you relax and start forgiving yourself for not being perfect :)

6 months is usually when a barista feels confident on the floor without help, don’t sweat it because everyone has been there!

I religiously stalk this subreddit for tips and tricks, but as far as in my actual store, no. Just the other partners.

I’ve been experiencing the exact same thing at my store. It’s also my first month here and I constantly get treated like a dumbass. So I know how you feel 100%! If u need to rant PM me! I’d be more than happy to talk :)
