I’m an SM and I’m sick of this.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by throwmygrounds
I’ve been a partner for a long time, long enough to see the changes and the writing on the wall.
My partners can’t afford their bills because I can’t give them enough hours, the staff I do have in my store are fed up and calling out making life harder for my team because were staffed to the minimum.
I have district breathing down my neck because I’m riding the line on labor and my customer connection dropped because none of my partners are particularly happy when they’re broke and over worked. Yet our ceo has an extra 50mil he’s gonna vest when the stock booms because he’s pulling the labor out of my stores pockets.
This is unsustainable. You joke about looking for a new job on breaks, I’m looking too. I can’t form a union because I’m management, but you all should.
CoffeeFueledFiction111 points3y ago
It’s honestly really nice to see an SM saying this. I got passed over for a promotion to shift and I felt like a jerk telling my boss I was going to have to continue being really particular about my hours in order for my other hustles to remain sustainable because I can’t afford my bills on a barista paycheck. Let alone hitting some of my larger financial goals in order to move into something resembling stability.
Sometimes it’s difficult knowing how people above me on the food chain feel about things. So thanks. I hope corporate reassesses how they’re approaching things because I WANT to be with this company for a long while but at this point my goal at the end of next year is to no longer have to financially rely on it, just in case.
nightkat899 points3y ago
Preach. I had a similar scenario except when I told my boss I’d have to continue my second job, my hours got cut from where they used to be.
I got hired on the “promise” of a shift position with my management history and still waiting to this day. May just hang up my apron instead because baristas. Do. Not. Get. Paid. Enough.
throwmygrounds [OP]1 points3y ago
Go licensed.
nightkat893 points3y ago
I heard that’s even worse
Audropolis71 points3y ago
Can we? Working until midnight on Thanksgiving really put the idea in my head
throwmygrounds [OP]67 points3y ago
It’s possible, you gotta do it secretly and you need to flip district by district not store by store. If you flip by store they’ll just separate the entire store for non obvious reasons as fast as possible. Walmart breaks unions by closing a store and reopening down the street.
SkinnyVanilly46 points3y ago
How on gods good earth do we organize something like this while being discreet at the same time? I’m all for it but the task seems too big to accomplish. While I’m sure more than 50% of partners would be on board I don’t see how we can get everyone to join in for fear of being punished by either cutting hours further or flat out termination. I’m worried about the later. Hell, im about to be living on my own and am worried I won’t be able to support myself and that’s with Shift pay. I recently just quit my side gig to take the promotion in hopes of more hours and higher pay. So much for that dream.
Side note.
This is my conspiratorial brain coming out but I feel we’d have to be stupid not to assume that someone in corporate has their nose in communities like this subreddit. It’s not as if us unionizing would be out of left field and I’m sure they have some sort of ground work planned if this were to happen.
agooddeathh15 points3y ago
I'm an occupational therapist and we are currently trying to form a union for therapists. We have a secret Facebook page, risky I know but we have grown to 200k users and it just started in November. So maybe something like that?
Edit. Facebook page for therapists interested in forming a union. I know the 1st step is you need a LOT of people to be on board.
elsha00710 points3y ago
Some stores in NYC tried in 2008 and it went poorly because they weren't able to get the whole district.
Audropolis9 points3y ago
Well, what if we started here? Used each other as resources for how to do it best, if we can one strong person on board for each store it's definitely possible.
PrincessSukee37 points3y ago
Man, this makes me really sad. SO many people are leaving. People that have been partners for YEARS. This sucks ass
PsychicPissJug26 points3y ago
Hey, so I'm just a customer, but I keep up on stuff like this because this is not the only company that does stuff like this. Wage theft, for example, is bigger than all other forms of theft in the United States, so that should give you an indication of how much your company cares about you.
There are probably some excellent books on unions (and union busting) so if you are curious I would look there.) Unfortunately, it's unlikely to get a whole district to keep their mouths shut but that should still be a goal.
I am writing this though to say, IF you are going to quit, talk to your coworkers. Talk to other Starbucks workers at other stores. If you can coordinate a walk out in your district where a good chunk of employees are okay with being fired because they are already to leave Starbucks, then make your leaving *count.*
Disrupt the stores ability to work. Possibly arrange pickets after the fact. And this is where the unionizing a district could occur: figure out a good head, a good leader, who can come up with a list of demands.
And that IS something you can talk about here:
It's clear you want the hours promised to you, or at least hours you can live on.A liveable wage. Not being short staffed.
That IS something that can be arranged here because it's all public knowledge. And then, in the meantime, figure out who's willing to quit and coordinate the walkout. Look to your state's labor laws in terms of legality of being fired. Sadly, unemployment will be worth very little to you, but if you can last without a job, definitely make the company have to pay into the unemployment system.
And finally, this next part cannot be done by any of you but can be done by any friends not connected to you (not that ones that comie visit you at the store or, as an extra layer of protection, aren't connected to you on social media: flyers. Flyer bomb the shit out of the cars in your parking lot once or twice a day explaining to customers via their windshield why what Starbucks is doing is unsustainable, and against what they want the customers to think. Encourage them to call corporate about labor shortages. Encourage them to raise a drink (I meant a stink!) about customer satisfaction recovery cards each and every time because the wait was too long. Make those Karens work *for you!*
Editing for typos. Sorry about that guys
Adding: this could gain momentum-- enough people walk out and picket, then suddenly more other employees join your picket line. Look to your city's bylaws (or ask r/legaladviceofftopic) to check local peaceable assembly laws and see if you need a permit.
In terms of flyers, if the property is private, a person can be asked to leave. Even if cops come, the person should be warned that if they come back they will be charged with tresspass. I think this is unlikely but just keep it in mind that you might need several people to do flyers on different days.
And, if you're just going to quit and can't form a walk out, hand out flyers at the drive through. Hopefully your SM is on your side but if not prepare to be sent home. But maybe you can hand out enough, especially during happy hours :)
rmshilpi2 points3y ago
Problem is that for every sympathetic SM like OP, there are more that are part of the problem. I left Starbucks years ago, but I had a lot of wage theft too, working off the clock. Problem is that the SM wasn't *technically* the one doing it - she was just the would who would write us up for not finishing work, or write up and eventually fire shift supervisors for overtime work, so the only way to do the job without risking the job was unpaid work. If we tried reporting it, only the shift supervisors get fired, not the SM who actually caused it. Starbucks *really* protects its managers.
PsychicPissJug1 points3y ago
All I can say about that, is keep track each and every time it happens-- date, times, who ordered it, who witnessed it. If possible, have coworkers also do this. And then contact the department of labor. This is also how a class action lawsuits can start. I completely understand what you are saying. But people also need to know that reporting such things also protects them from being fired. That's why it's a bad idea to keep the complaints "in house" to corporate only unless you have written proof. You can still likely fight it if it's only verbal but I assume that would be harder.
This might also be a roundabout way to unionizing. A lot of people misunderstand what a union does, and/or their parents have always used it as something that's bad. But if you ask about wage theft, and gather people *that* way...maybe there's something to that, some form of added protection that trying to unionize doesn't give you.
sunnysideup232326 points3y ago
This could’ve been about my store. A shift broke down in the back room the other day, people are calling out because they’re over worked, we’re having to borrow partners so our regular partners don’t go into overtime and our connections are getting worse.

Can you shed light on the not giving people enough hours ? I moved to a new city and my SM promised a 5 day work week and I’m getting 2-3 days ... out of the 5 I said I can work
Now I am in a new town and my boyfriend is flipping the fuck out, and now my work life and outside life are steadily going down the drain
throwmygrounds [OP]25 points3y ago
When did you move? We were given the green light to run labor all year until about mid to late November. We were allowed to make investments all year then we had to schedule to forecast, now we need to schedule to forecast but cut labor to earned. So before we might have had 620 hours on a schedule, then we had to cut down to 600, now we’re down to 580. Because that’s what we’re actually earning.
It’s an adjustment period, but I question the timing of this when we should be pushing labor to capture new guests with all of the gift cards that were given out. Instead we’re pushing fatigued partners beyond the failure point. It’s compounding. Working a partner 35 hours but you’re staffed all day means the work is easy and balanced and they can pay their bills. Working 22 hours in five or six days and it feels like you’re down a partner every single shift is a road to nowhere.
BlazedCollegeKids5 points3y ago
It was late November after thanksgiving that we discussed my hours. I was put on the schedule in December on the 23rd given 3 days of 5 hour shifts 😅
throwmygrounds [OP]12 points3y ago
Go to a licensed store. Look at hospitals, targets, grocery wherever. Licensed doesn’t get the benefits but the pay is better. Example in my area, baristas make 12-13, SSV makes 14 and change. Licensed baristas make 15-18.
BlazedCollegeKids3 points3y ago
I appreciate the honesty! Thank you! I am pretty clueless on my life choices so far, but I love Starbucks and making coffee. Will be looking at other places sooner than later
OrangeElvis2 points3y ago
Can you work at both ? Licensed store and company stores?
tiarraedwards14 points3y ago
It’s a great idea. I’m fed up with Starbucks. I had to stay two hours later than scheduled on Christmas Eve and missed my family’s celebration. I’ve been sick since then calling in because I can barely walk and my managers are pissed at me. I’m on the brink of quitting.
customerny-27 points3y ago
Did you not get paid for those hours? If you were paid, what is the issue? Did you not know you will be scheduled to work those hours?
bbun22324 points3y ago
Seriously? What’s the issue? Working a full shift on your feet and then having to stay an additional two hours when you’re exhausted and understaffed. Yeah sure you’re getting payed, but being expected to stay at work outside of your scheduled time is not something anyone signed up for.
TheBlueSuperNova5 points3y ago
They can’t make you stay past your scheduled shift. I don’t care how bad my store is, if I’m off I’m off. I hope you don’t continue to bleed for a company that won’t do the same .
customerny-12 points3y ago
Is what they did in anyway, shape or form illegal? If so just refuse to work those hours. If it's not illegal either look for a new job, according to employment numbers it should be easy to find another job. Your other choice is to have the law changed.
bbun2236 points3y ago
Yeah it could be technically illegal if someone was forced to stay past closing. We always need a minimum of 2 partners in the store, if the close isn’t complete you sort of have no choice but to stay or face the wrath and possible punishment from your manager. And also....You are aware that Starbucks is all over the world, in towns and cities of varying size and employment opportunities right? You don’t know peoples situations as to why they stay or don’t have other options. You can’t just assume things.
Cignus77713 points3y ago
Damn I didn’t realize how bad it has gotten. I’m a partner at a store that has experienced exponential growth, but didn’t realize this was going on.
colonade179 points3y ago
My DM was complaining that customer connection scores are dropping and just refuses to see the connection between staffing and morale and baristas earning enough to pay their bills. He talks about how great the 3% raise is, but it doesn't matter if you have 10% fewer hours.
BoomSoonPanda7 points3y ago
Unionize!!!!!!!!!
bigmike4506 points3y ago
Posts like these have become too common. Let's all strike or something, get a union
BrOKen03186 points3y ago
I agree. I’m a fellow barista. Starbucks is great and as a barista I want to move up but the possibility of that for me with my disabilities that I use the insurance for make that hard. Which requires me to not make enough money to support myself. Which is why I had to cut hours to pick up another job. Simply because starbucks only does 5&8 shifts like anywhere else..... i would work more hours but the hours don’t fit into my schedule as I also am trying to go to college.... because I need to afford myself. As an adult... (19.)I’m creeking bones like an old man at this point, the work I try to get done while I’m there is unbelievable our store can be a mess at times or super slow. It depends on the days and how many people call off that day (sometimes like 1-4 people will) like nearly everyday...
hexhawken6 points3y ago
In just a barista so I understand even tho my manager does have district down his back he is still give everyone around 30 hr. My store talked about a union but we dont think other store would jump on the wagon. We want to unionize becuse of the short staff at night we are lucky to get out before 11 on weekdays 12 on weekends
[deleted]5 points3y ago
UNIONIZE
jazmynriv3 points3y ago
I totally understand this...I’ve been asking for full time hours, still don’t get them, finishing my degree online, and on food assistance and not able to pay my basic bills....I talked to my SM about this and she mentioned the SSV role and haven’t heard since. I travel 30min to get to my store and the option of transferring has been pretty shut down.
throwmygrounds [OP]4 points3y ago
Go on partner hub and print the transfer paperwork. Fill it out take a picture of it and give it to your Sm. They have five days to respond. If they say no call your dm.
jazmynriv1 points3y ago
I didn’t know that part! Ok cool, thank you!
rmshilpi3 points3y ago
When I was partner, I loved the job...but I definitely quit my manager, in large part because of labor and hours issues.
Theotar3 points3y ago
When I was asking for a raise they pushed me all the up to regional manager. The regional told me they had to talk with the people above then. I was a shift lead at the time and I asked them how much is this 1 dollar raise costing them? pushing it past regional manager can’t be cheep.
Starbucks rather pull teeth out then give a raise or better hours. There gonna ask Howard to comeback again.
OrangeElvis3 points3y ago
I was working a 40 hr week job 154 hrs of PTO was their 5 years and decided to try SB, now I'm onmy getting 21 hrs to 25 .. making 500 a paycheck when I use to make 708 because of 401k .. been their 3 months and I'm so discouraged and disappointed.. I'm making it barely because my husband makes more then by alot .. so I completely understand ladies and gentlemen
tiarraedwards3 points3y ago
I also work in a college town so jobs are scarce here. Everyone at my store wants to quit but has nowhere to go. They want to pick up another job despite being full time college students because they can’t pay their bills. Everyone is stressing and people are getting sick. And most of the people are home for the break so we’re even more understaffed

Let start by acknowledging that Starbucks is fast food place. Also acknowledging that minimum wage is designed for those with no skills and usually living at home. Lastly that no one guarantee anyone minimum hours. Ultimately it's management job to maximize maximum profit for the owners aka shareholders. If you do not like that ceo is going to make 50 mil than get together with big number of shareholders and vote current board out. Otherwise stop complaining and get to work or find another job. I guarantee that no one will be missing you as another person will take over your place. That is right right, plenty of people are looking for a job and willing to work the hours that Starbucks will give them.
throwmygrounds [OP]18 points3y ago
Ok bub I’ll bite. I understand probably better than you what being a partner means. We’re not employees as you seem to be insinuating, we’re partners. We’re not cogs in a machine we’re men and women seeking to find meaning in a fair wage and fair working conditions in a company of like minded and open individuals. We’re as much a social experiment in humanistic leadership as we are a for profit enterprise. We hold these ideals not because we expect them, but because it’s what’s right and it’s what we’ve been told to expect from the company we’ve given our hopes and ambitions to.
What was special in us dying, and I’m afraid it’s dying on our watch. We weren’t Taco Bell, we’re not McDonald’s, we were never supposed to be hipster fast food. That’s the market we’ve positioned our selves in and it’s a race to the bottom. I’m not sure why you’re discussing minimum wage because it’s not something I’ve brought up at any point while discussing hours and working conditions.
Final point: “Ok boomer”.
customerny-10 points3y ago
Let me start by saying I am not boomer. Also Starbucks got drive thru and some having exclusively drive thru. To me that is fast food anyway you put it. I brought up minim wage because you brought people not being able to make enough money. Like it or not but Starbucks is in a way same as all other fast food places, yes even McDonald's.
Regarding you being called partners, that is another word for employee. Like it or not but is exactly what you are. Also you want fair wage but what makes you valuable to the company that would make them pay you more? What value do you bring? Anyone can be taught how to make a drink, use pos, do cs etc.
Whagarble12 points3y ago
Minimum wage was never designed to be poverty wages. STFU with that.
Glad the billionaires have people like you to stand up for their interests though. Well done
customerny1 points3y ago
I agree that when minimum wage was introduced, it was designed to support family but that haven't been reality in a long time. Stop holding on to that dream of making "living" wage while working fast food type of jobs. It's not realistic
Whagarble7 points3y ago
Every bit of progress that's been made in the last 300 years has had people exactly like you working against it.
People deserve a better life. No one deserves to starve or go homeless because they aren't working a job you deem acceptable.
You keep being weak and demoralizing, those of us working for a better life will keep fighting you back.
customerny-2 points3y ago
More power to you in working for better life. I hope you are able to find better job soon that pays you much better. However do not expect to be paid better just because you feel you deserve more pay. It just do not work that way. I am sorry to tell you this
