Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

198 partner, can we fight the dress code? I’m an African American transman with tattoos on my face and that double nostril piercing meant the world to me. How can I smile brightly knowing how Starbucks feels about my face? Tattoo and piercing is part of identity like hair style. What about this pain (self.starbucksbaristas)

I feel like the piercing thing is something that is highly dependent on the SM. Ours isn’t particularly strict and I’ve gotten away with a ring in my nose (prior to the change) and now a small ring and my septum (since the change).

Facial tattoos is a bit tougher. They really aren’t “mainstream” the way facial piercings are becoming and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. You’d be hard pressed to find many customer-facing jobs that allow facial tattoos, outside of the obvious like tattoo parlors, maybe some bars/clubs.

I’m sorry if my comment frustrated you. I’m just providing some input.

I don’t know if you were hired with face tattoos or got them after you were hired, but either way, I don’t feel like it’s an unreasonable rule. I’m not anti-tattoo, by any means, but facial tattoos are still pretty taboo in Western culture. It’s not like they recently created this policy and retroactively require you to follow it.

So let me get this straight: you started working for Starbucks with face tattoos, knowing they were against the dress code, and are upset you have to cover them? I get that they’re for religious purposes but Starbucks has an image they like for their baristas and you chose to work for them knowing that your face tattoos didn’t fit that clean “business casual” type aesthetic corporate wants us to look like.
