What is my incentive as a barista to lower drive thru times? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by himynametopher
I just started at a drive thru store after being at a cafe store for two years and I’m not sure what I get for being quick?

nothing lol honestly ive been trying to figure this out myself. i just try my best and if i can get the lower good if not i still get paid the same. they really need to offer us something. like a small bonus.

Dt times affect labour hours. So if you like making more money and getting more hours then there’s incentive for you. Good dt times means serving more customers, store making more money... therefore even more labour hours.

Also low dt times gets your store put under a microscope with your district manager and regional manager. They want to know why scores are low and want answers and skill checks on staff to be made. Surprise visits will be made.... shift supervisors start coaching the shit out of you everyday. It makes everyone feel the pressure. Having good dt scores just means you’re doing your job well and you can go about your day knowing your fucking amazing at being a barista.

Yeah that makes sense I just wish there was like a quarterly or semi annual bonus or something for the like top stores in a district. I just hate doing more work than what I am getting paid for but I guess that’s being a barista lol.

I like to see how quickly I can get drinks out, if the flow is going well, to get a high number through drive through. The box with all the numbers, that show your drive times and stuff, counts how many you get through in half an hour. My record while I was on Drive Bar and barring alone was 37. I just make a game out of it. But I really enjoy setting stupid goals like that for myself to break.

That’s not for everyone though, but it’s how I have fun while also working. :]

I like going fast I just think drive times add unnecessary stress on everyone if they serve no purpose other than stressing us to go faster. If we meet them and earn nothing extra what’s the point ya know. I’m not working for glory.

37 is amazing considering you were alone!

Thanks! I was in rare form that day. It hasn’t happened again. lol.

From my understanding, drive times dictate labor for your store. I’m not 100%, but I remember my shift saying that at one point.
flurry_fizz 2 points 3y ago
Not directly but the faster you go, the more customers you can serve. The more customers you serve the more labor you get. So yes and no.
cloudsgone 3 points 3y ago
They used go dictate labor but at this point I'm pretty sure allotted labor is whatever is going to make someone way above our pay grade more money. My only personal reason for keeping them low is so I dont have to deal with pissed off shitty customers who couldn't walk their fat asses inside to order 6+ beverages for them and their dumb fuck office mates.
himynametopher [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Yeah like obviously I want to get stuff out at a reasonable speed but it just doesn’t seem worth stressing about the numbers if they don’t benefit me in anyway.
asocial_hermit 2 points 3y ago
allegedly labor allotment. but at my store we just get yelled at when DT times are high even if it's not really our fault (customer taking too long to order, customer adding things at the window, customer forgot drink was iced)
/frapp). and the times our DT time are really good our shift just (imo rudely) tells the 4 of us in drive "well i'm glad you all learned to do your jobs" and then someone awkwardly says "yeah, i guess..." and then we all stare at each other.

Our manager is happy when our times are low. Then they are nice. That’s a good incentive to me LOL

It's your job. Don't wanna do your job? We'll find someone else who will.

You shouldn't need "incentive" to do *anything* at work, *it's your job*
himynametopher [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Oh sick do you work for free?
Lilium816 1 points 3y ago
That is your "incentive"
himynametopher [OP] 7 points 3y ago
Sick do I get a wage that’s proportionate to the drive times?
himynametopher [OP] 4 points 3y ago
Like obviously I’m going to do it. It just seems stupid for corporate to put the stress of drive times on us if we don’t even benefit from having good ones.
Lilium816 2 points 3y ago
You do, you just don't see it immediately. The scheduling forecasts are based on the previous years performance of the same day. So if you're in DT and performing lackadaisically you won't be able to pad (for a lack of better terms) your sales. Even if you were busy it won't look like it. So next year when the forecast comes around it will likely be less than it was while you were there.
