Should I apply? (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hey guys! I love reading this sub and I’ve always wanted to be a barista. Right now, I have two jobs (one at a smoothie shop and another at a store). I am 17 years old and I’m really looking to save money for college when I leave in August of next year.

The job at the smoothie shop I have now has changed. I’ve worked there for a year and a half and it just isn’t what it was when I started. My shift today really pushed me over the edge and made me realize that it could be going down hill.

Before today, I already applied to three other coffee shops. I only heard back from one and my schedule just didn’t work out w their shifts. I’m really wanting another job that I can work in the morning before I go to school around 1. In my town, not many stores or restaurants open before 10 so I wouldn’t be able to work at a lot in the morning.

I do have a Starbucks in an outdoor mall that is hiring. I’ve always thought it would be so cool to be a barista and I’m hoping I could transfer my skills to a potential job in college (like maybe transfer from the Starbucks in my hometown to one in my college town). But this sub and the main Starbucks sub show a lot of bad things from employees. I know all jobs have their ups and downs and I’m only hearing from a select percentage but I’m worried about my mental health if I do get a job here. I would potentially only work for 8 months so I might not feel the burn out that some of you do? Or I might just have a really good manager?

I’m just not sure what I should do. Would you recommend working at Starbucks?

Oh and do you think it would be possible to only work like 2 mornings a week? Or do you think I would need more availability than that? Or does it really depend on the store?

Sorry for being so long. Thanks in advance!

Honestly, if you care a lot about your mental health I wouldn't recommend working at Starbucks. I used to work for Starbucks years ago when I was in college and I ended up in the hospital after having a mental breakdown because of my job and the situations from my store bleeding into my life as well as a few physical injuries. I ended up leaving because one of my shift supervisors threw a pitcher and a cup of hot water at me because my being in the hospital and unable to work was inconvenient for them. And when I went to my boss, they said that shifts can run their shift as they see fit.

I recently, (possibly for the worst) started working at Starbucks again, cause like I couldn't find a job in my field and I need someone to pay me. And I don't love it, I do like barring and I'm fine at register but it's like customers have gotten worse and my manager is totally fine if customers yell at us. My manager says that we would "ruin the customer's experience" if we stopped a customer from yelling at us."

With that all said, it is very possible that I've ended up at two really bad stores. But there's also just the general labor cuts and the low pay to contend with.

I’m going to be honest. No. Don’t do it. Find a local coffee shop if you want to be a barista. I’ve been dealing with health problems not related to Starbucks but Starbucks for sure made them worse. And opening every morning ruined my life. After I separated from the coffee my cheeks became fuller and I started going back to my old happy self. It just drains you and makes you just as bitter as the coffee tbh and it’s not worth dealing with the customers these days

ahh yes, what is Starbucks if not the place that exacerbates health problems?

If you’re only 17 and also have limited availability it may be a difficult job for you.

I think with this job you either learn grace under pressure or you crack.

I’m 40 so I’ve had a wide variety of jobs at this point, plus I’ve run my own business and other people’s businesses. Right now I am working here for the benefits, while simultaneously running one business of my own and another business that belongs to a family member. For me, at least with Starbucks when I leave, I can actually “leave”, I’m not on call 24/7.

Frankly the most comparable job to this that I’ve had, was as an emergency medical technician. The pace/complexity/physical activity requirements are surprisingly similar. And the stuff you are seeing posted here about partner stress levels, are also similar to EMT workers. The main differences are the amount of blood (lol), and that EMTs are trained to expect a high level of stress and provided counseling if they need it.

A nice thing about this compared to EMT work though, is I get paid to make people happy. Whether we reach that or not, it is an underlying goal of Starbucks, to provide a place for people to be happy. I can’t say that about any other job I’ve had. It is a nice change for me.
