I work in a franchised store in the UK We have a tip jar at POS, but my manager takes the money to make up for if the till is short. He tells partners this if they ask or complain about him taking emptying the jar. We never seem to get any money back if the till is over.
A supervisor has told me she keeps the extra money in a draw to split between partners but that it disappears by the next day
Is there anything I can do? Should I do anything?

Report them to higher ups. No way is this okay.

I thought about it, but with the way those higher ups are gouging hours to save money, i don’t think they’d care.
I’m worried it would hurt any chance I have for promotion as well.
God I sound like such a shill. I should take the risk for my fellow partners, but damn bud - I need to pay rent.

Dont they do the anonymous pulse survey? Maybe you can submit through there. But I understand you're scared for your job. I've never been in management at starbucks, and I'm from the US so I dont know how it goes.

Also you're not a shill. I didnt consider them retaliating, that's my bad.

I’m not sure about UK Starbucks, but legally the store manager cannot touch the tip jars, let alone take money out of the jar to make tills match. When I closed with a store manager he had to walk me through how to do tips and then had me insert the tips into the safe. He then had me witness the profits from the tills go into the safe.
Bottom line: this is illegal and you need to report them. Call the PCC.

If a random customer grabbed money out of the tip jar that's theft and I might call the police. Not sure about labor laws or franchise agreements over there, but in America that would be illegal wage theft and would result in immediate disciplinary action and likely termination of the manager and also potential legal action from all the employees at the store for theft of wages.
Report it to corporate. report it to your managers boss. Report it to the authorities.

I had one time a customer who were short .25 and digged through my team's tip jar to make up the money.

Never okay to balance the tills with tips! I would definitely report it to Partner Contact Center, he could be terminated for that

That’s hella illegal, at least here in Canada. I’m not familiarized with UK law but I’d imagine it would be the same.

UK law allows a manager to take money from a communal jar, as that is not yet employee money. Unless a customer hands me the money specifically for me, it’s fair game. At least that’s what I’ve found so far.
