Am I the only person who practically lives on cs? And not because I'd rather do cs than bar, but because I feel like no one else can do things right or they half ass everything. I'm a closer as well, fyi, so most days i come in I have no other choice but to be on cs, as no one but 2 other partners seem to be able to handle cs. And the worst part is, my SM wont acknowledge this. Nobody is getting put on cs except for these 3 partners because everyone is "afraid things won't get done." Idk. Just annoying. Wish everyone would put the same amount of effort in. Things would be easier.

shifts tend to place people based on their strengths which is great and all until you have partners that are really only experienced in one or two roles. had a similar experience always being on drive until i said something about it to the shifts.

I can easily flex anywhere, I'm about to start my shift training soon. But yeah I definitely see that every single day. And I get why, but also we have one barista who is only ever on drive :( so we always try to put him on bar when we're slow

We don’t even have a CS at my store- technically the shift is? My SM said we’re in perma go-mode at our store. But the shift/cs don’t actually do any help most of the time. One of our nighttime ssv was on bar with me the other night and he actually stayed in position (wasn’t the shift that night, was acting as barista) and he was getting so frustrated that we were busy and no one was stocking up. We need milk, we still need milk, why hasn’t anyone gotten us ice?
I stopped once to say “hey homie, no one is going to. The shift isn’t going to drop their stuff to help us unless we ask. Now think about how often we ask you for help and you tell us “you got it! I believe in you! You’re doing so great!” and then go back to the pull. I’ll go get some milk and we’ll keep on. Take a breath.”

That’s rough. We have an SSV, I’m one of the 4 in my store, that was hired outside and doesn’t help at all!!! When I’m working on their shift I want to scream, I’m like I just want to be a barista today, I don’t want to run your floor since I always have to run my floor!!!
pleasesurpriseme 3 points 3y ago
Exactly! The most heard refrain from the folks who work their shifts is that we just want to do our jobs. I get flexing positions, we do a lot of that at our store, but sometimes it’d be really nice to walk into work and just do the one job you’re supposed to. Not run the floor as baristas, not spend it all doing bar/ovens/front reg and punching in drive’s orders while they bar alongside you
espressnooo [OP] 3 points 3y ago
If only Starbucks would stop cutting :-) this would all be possible. And I love that everyone who leaves after 2 PM thinks it all stops there and all we closers have to do is close. Haha yeah. I wish.
pleasesurpriseme 2 points 3y ago
Yeah, I work all day parts so I know the struggle everyone mentions and can be a unbiased source to say “well actually...” . In drive the other night we hit 40-50 trans per half when we weren’t projected even half that busy. It gets rough at night.

I love CS. I'm good at it, I understand its importance, and doing it well myself makes everything else less stressful. But I'm also autistic and a slight neatnik when it comes to my work space so I suppose the shoe fits. I'm usually put on bar if we have baby baristas ringing or during happy hour because I'm tidy and I don't lose my mind, or on reg during other rushes because I'm fast and accurate, but when I'm allowed to choose for myself I take CS or otherwise set to various tasks. I find it satisfying and it lets me get away from people.
espressnooo [OP] 1 points 3y ago
I agree. I'm either put on cs immediately, because I'm ancient at our store (I've only been here a year so think about that) or I choose it because I'm closing and I know I'm the only person that will do it right. Dont get me wrong, this post wasnt to complain about cs. But more about the fact that a lot of shifts refuse to put less experience people on cs because "we want to get stuff done", but like, then they never learn!!!
a-dek-lia 3 points 3y ago
Oh boy. Feel this! There are def people who are better at different roles than others so they get placed there consistently. We all need to rotate all the roles for us all to grow in them. It sucks because during peak, as a shift, you want your best people in their best role. Ask your shift you’d like to spend more time in different positions! A good leader will broaden your experience.

I'm really not complaining me for myself but more so I would like for our other baristas to get time in other positions to learn them and get comfortable. Theres so much more than b as r and drive thru or front. And a lot of our baristas come to work and only do one thing the entire time. We need more time to train is what I keep preaching but training just decreases more and more and everyone wonders why so many baristas only know certain positions. I guess I should have noted this is basically a complain to corporate. I wish they would LISTEN to their baristas for once.

I used to be assigned floors every day. Then I started taking my time to do them properly.

They stopped assigning me CS after that.

Very good move. 10/10

yeah this happens to me too. i'm fast in bar but apparently customers rly like me. i hate it so so much my store is full of the rudest people on the planet
Jezi_Belle_ 1 points 3y ago
I'm exactly the same but only on register and drive. I've never gotten to work bar, I've been CS all of *one* time. My shifts are all during morning peak, since a ton of our partners are in school and can only work in the afternoons -- so I'm almost always either on front or DTR.

I've literally never been trained on bar. Literally! I did all the computer training in a rush on one afternoon because we got told we had to do it within like four days. And I'm guessing that a good part of why I get so few hours is because I can't bar.
espressnooo [OP] 2 points 3y ago
Honestly, if you can, change your schedule. You said your shifts are during the morning, so no one is ever going to put you on bar during peak. Try to mix it up and switch your hours to mid or night shifts. I guarantee you if you ask your mid-closing shift to give you bar time, it will happen. Personally, we aren't dead entirely during nights, but there are a lot of evenings where we try our best to give our less experienced baristas more time on bar because we dont have a peak. That's the biggest issue we have at our store right now. Even if it's one night a week! Try to do mid or close. You will get more bar time I promise.
Jezi_Belle_ 1 points 3y ago
I'm already only getting 2 or 3 shifts a week as it is, despite having open availability. We have a lot of students who can only work afternoonsand evenings, so that's where I get put. :/ I'm gonna ask my SM about more hours and training soon, and if things don't improve I'll probably start looking elsewhere.
espressnooo [OP] 1 points 3y ago
If anything try to transfer! Every store is different trust me.
colonade17 1 points 3y ago
As a closing shift I sympathise. But I also understand why they're doing that. When you're barely staffed to what you need is not the time to try to teach a new partner CS. I try when I can, but especially with the labor cuts it's hard to do. I would try talking to your SSV and ask that they try to mix it up more when they can.
espressnooo [OP] 3 points 3y ago
Yeah and that's the problem with being a closer lol we have just enough people to run a floor, so of course I'm going to be on cs, because we have no time to train. Its stressful and frustrating but I do get why it happens.
espressnooo [OP] 2 points 3y ago
And honestly there really is no talking to my SSVs. After a lot of shift meetings they acknowledge the few baristas that are constantly put on cs and sometimes some of our shifts will even put themselves on cs to relieve us of the daily routine. But, like I said, it would be nice if they stop cutting hours, so that some of our not so experienced baristas could actually learn the routine or cs. It was very difficult when I first started working here. Cs was the most difficult for me to get down. Now, with some changes in corporate and the entire flow of our store getting 10x better, it isn't THAT bad, but I still would like to come in sometimes and just slam bar like I use to. But now I just wash dishes until my hands practically bleed:-)
